GTX 580 HDMI audio vs dedicated card such as Asus Xonar Essence STX?

Thread Starter
I am currently have GTX 580 HDMI out (audio and video) to my Yamaha RX-V671 receiver, which outputs to 7.1+2 Klipsch speakers (9 Quintet SL and 1 12" Sub).

I am some what disappointed at the sound quality (lack dynamic & fidelity), especially when watching bluray with PowerDVD 11. Before this setup I have Creative X-Fi dedicated sound card (sold) and Klipsch 2.1 computer speaker which sounds great. I am sure it has nothing to do with the disc since I also watch bluray my laptop via external headphone amp + AKG K702. Please understand that I am no audiophile and don't have canine hearing. But anyone but deaf can tell the difference between the two (old dedicated card plus 2.1 speakers)

I am expecting the GTX 580 is simply not up to the task. It can't output bitstream to receiver and couldn't process HD audio effectively. Is my assumption correct? Would invest in a dedicated sound card such Asus Xonar Essence STX solve my problem?

Many thanks in advance.

Yes i would invest in a sound card because video cards arent really made for sound mostly video . Id go with a 70 dollar price range sound card because anything much lower is like onboard audio. Read reviews check the details and make sure you can plug it into your receiver.

Thank you for the reply.

After some extensive research, I found out there is virtually no different in quality between capable video card and dedicated sound card as far as stream to a receiver. In fact, you may see a decrease in audio quality in audio when playing bluray movie since dedicated sound tend to encode and compress signal before send to receiver via S/PDIF while video card stream uncompressed signal to receiver.

As for GTX 580, my only disappointment is that it doesn't bitstream... which could explain the degrade in bluray audio. I guess I will just wait for the next generation of GPU instead of investing in a sound card. Hopefully, nvidia will include bitstream feature then.

Using the HDMI from your video card is the same as using your onboard audio.

Have you tried using another cable source directly to your motherboard? If that sound doesn't satisfy you, then go a dedicated sound card.

Exactly what I thought, only except onboard can only handle up to 48hz while video card can do 192. Do you have a good suggestion on dedicated sound card?

Your correct that the 580 does not bitstream. At this point you can downgrade to another Nvidia card that does (GTX560) or upgrade to a AMD card that does.
You can use PCM get that uncompressed audio to work on your 580.

I am going wait to see if nvidia kepler implement bitstream on the new GPU. If not, I will switch to HD7970 instead. The downside is which I will lose CUDA.

Many said PCM is just as good as bitstream. But audio from this setup doesn't impress me at all, the sound lack dimension and fidelity. Most like 2 channel source been processed into surround. I am sure it isn't the bluray or receiver / speakers... which left me nothing to blame except GTX 580.

Anyone else connecting their GTX580 to a receiver and notice a downgrade in audio quality?

I am still debating whether to get a high end dedicated sound card such as Asus Xonar STX.... do you think it has better DAC than Yamaha RX-V671?
