[Nordic HW] "We expected more from Radeon HD 7900" [Exclusive] - Page 11

post #101 of 115
This is my take on the whole situation...
AMD is a business. There GPUs (as well as cpus) have always been taken down by the competition. Even the 5xxx series.
I believe AMD is holding back on using the full potential of the 28nm process. Its nearly half the size, yet only a 30% increase in performance. They want to take out NVidia and they probably decided to wait for NVidia to bring out their next gen cards in order to bring out the HD8xxx. In the meantime, they brought out a "filler" card to take the crown in the shortrun.

HD7000 --> NVidia counters ---> AMD says "Here's the real card" ----> HD8000 series

This would be nice if it were true.. .I want to see the underdog come out ahead for once...

Never assume, especially if you're trying to debate. It makes an ass out of you AND me... biggrin.gif
Anyways, here's a 6870 @ 1015 core... This is higher than your average OC on a 6870.
http://3dmark.com/3dm11/131040
~4500 Graphics score. That's not bad.... But once again, my 470 does ~5700 GPU score.... It's just the faster card bro. No harm intended. When i'm home later i'll grab a screeny, but you can gladly search up any decently clocked 470 3dmark11 scores that are just as good and better than mine.
I realize that's just one test as well, but i'd be glad to do some further comparisons. smile.gif
PS- You own 580s... You should know how beast Fermi is / was thumb.gif

I never said Fermi isn't good. It is good. It seemed initially that your comparison was either wrong or had omitted variables (in this case, overclocking + aftermarket cooling) . which is why I mentioned it wink.gif

After reading the clarifying comments It appears that the 470 does take the lead with overclocking, sounds fair enough to me thumb.gif

Cool. smile.gif

My reasoning behind that was mainly because the 6870 is very close already to what you'd expect from final performance. Very high stock clocks, while the blacksheep 470 is underclocked severely, so it's almost unfair in it's own right.

Anyways, can't wait for all the GPU releases this year. Looking forward to HD8970 in December biggrin.gif Maybe.

AMD just hasn't upped the specs under the hood enough imo. They are too conservative. Not a whole lot happening from generation to generation.

If they come out so soon with 8xxx series only to give Nvidia an answer about their Kepler then I feel a big sorry for those you early adopted hd7xxx series. It will be very bad for them. I don't think AMD will release 8xxx so soon. If they do they will really fank up their customers.

My HD 5850 @ 1Ghz/1275Mhz was faster then my GTX470 @ 800Mhz. Only tested DX9/10 games back then. Other then DX11 games, HD 5850 was better in every way. That being said GTX470 alone is not really ideal for DX11 games like Metro, Crysis 2.

all these 8000 series rumors started because somebody somewhere misunderstood that leaked document from sapphire. it showed a card with 2304 shaders and identical clock speeds as a 7970, but it said "suspended" at the top. the section below it said "hd 7970" and listed all sapphires upcoming models. the 8970, or whatever it may be called, will not have a mere shader bump from the 7970 and release a few months later. the card in question was likely a "7980" or maybe AMD planned/plans to release a 7970 revision when the 28nm process matures a bit.

Wouldn't be anything we haven't seen before, though (e.g. GTX 480: March 26, 2010 -> GTX 580: November 9, 2010).

Exactly. I don't think 4xx owners felt shafted by 5xx, just as 79xx wont about 89xx.

This is all really moot... DX11 GPU for DX11 games please. 4xx tesselation and DX11 is much better than Cypress.

I don't think anyone really cares. If kepler comes out soon , great i'll buy it. Selling used hardware is not hard if you keep it in good condition.

Regardless, nvidia should stop with the viral marketing and do their freakin' job (of making the card). Since they're so intent on flooding the internet with lies , perhaps it means that Kepler is behind schedule just like fermi was. Shrug. NV just needs to put or shut up. The last time they flooded the internet with lies was with the GTX 480, which wasn't released until 7 months after the 5870. " blabla blaablabla GTX 480 will be 3x faster than 5870." Whatever. I'm tired of hearing them flap their gums. Thats why I think Kepler is behind schedule, but if not hey great. Another new toy for me to buy.

I shouldn't need to remind anyone of the lies NV marketers spread (and AEG in particular) when 5870 was released. I'm weary of listening to NV's marketers because of that.
