HTPC, future build....

Thread Starter
Alright so I'm looking to build an HTPC, yes I know another HTPC thread.

Here's what I'm looking for as far as advice:

1) Should I go MicroATX or miniITX?

2) Should I get an SSD as a boot drive along with a WD CavBlk 2TB Drive?

3) GFX Card for full 1080p experience? or Sound Card and have amazing sound quality?

4) Overkill I know but let's talk Liquid Cooling, Custom Loop! (Won't change my mind on this!)

5) How much ram? I was thinking 4GB's...

6) PSU wattage? Both previous Desktop are pretty high end so not sure here... Thought;s?

7) Case?! Looking to show this off, anything in mind or should I build custom mod case?!

8) Cord management? What would you consider here?

9) LED's? =D

10) I know I'm forgetting something... help me out here =D

1) Should I go MicroATX or miniITX?

MicroATX. Slightly larger than miniITX. Mini ITX would be pretty small to work with liquid cooling on.

2) Should I get an SSD as a boot drive along with a WD CavBlk 2TB Drive?

Yes. Would be handy to have a quick boot up on an HTPC.

3) GFX Card for full 1080p experience? or Sound Card and have amazing sound quality?

If it's one or the other, I would choose the GPU every time. However, you could use an on-board GPU and still get 1080, and use a sound card as well. If you plan on running games, go for the GPU, if it's just for movies and music, get on-board GPU and a sound card.

4) Overkill I know but let's talk Liquid Cooling, Custom Loop! (Won't change my mind on this!)

Ok.

5) How much ram? I was thinking 4GB's...

4 gigs should be plenty, if you are using all of it regularly, you can always add more/upgrade the kit at a later time.

6) PSU wattage? Both previous Desktop are pretty high end so not sure here... Thought;s?

You really need to know what exactly you'll be running before this can be answered.

7) Case?! Looking to show this off, anything in mind or should I build custom mod case?!

I'd build one. Then you get EXACTLY what you want without a doubt.

8) Cord management? What would you consider here?

I'll leave this for someone else, my cables are a mess! lol

9) LED's? =D

Depends on if you would be distracted by them or not. If you decide on putting them in, put in a switch so you can turn them off if needed.

1) wouldnt ITX be worthless sine you are going water cooled?
3) GFX Card for full 1080p experience? or Sound Card and have amazing sound quality?
DTS/DD/TrueHD/DTSMA-HD will all sound the exact same if using hdmi to a receiver.

I would be looking for liquid cooling simply so that I don't have the noise from fans....

MATX/ITX
APU
Passive Cooling
Silent PSU
Noctua Case fans.

That should really do it. No need for a GPU as the APU's are powerful enough to run 1080p video/Blu-Ray.

Also really no need for liquid on this build....

With liquid cooling you're still going to need fans for the rad.

You wouldn't if you used passive cooling either wink.gif Maybe two case fans at most
