Unfortunately Bulldozer will just not get better in Windows 7. Maybe we'll see some good results in Windows 8, but mainly I think it's more a problem of the chip itself not the support by the OS.

Windows 8 probably won't make any difference.

Someone ran Cinebench on Windows 8 Dev and got 7.49 @ 4.64 GHz:

c2bb6b7b_CINEBENCH11.54.6GHZ.png

Compare that to the score of 7.53 @ 4.62 GHz in Windows 7:

I still say they just shrink the Phenom II die and slap two more cores onto it. tongue.gif That did pretty well for most games for the Thuban line. If all six cores were used it was as good as the first gen i7s. biggrin.gif

As nice as it will be to see an end to all the 'just wait till after the god patch' responses whenever someone brings up benchies that display BD's lackluster performance in comparison to intel's current offerings, I sure wish AMD had brought something a little better to the table and pressured intel a bit. Maybe they'll get the next one right--I would sure love an excuse to drop an AMD chip back into my main rig. I was tinkering with the OC on my 955 rig last night and it made me sure miss OCing an AMD chip. Plus, I have always favored mobos with an AMD chipset. smile.gif /crosses_fingers

Windows 8 isn't going to make anything better.

The only thing that was going to slightly improve was lightly threaded performance. Multi-threaded performance can't improve any further because the CPU was already at 100%. Every single bit of it was used.

Even AMD's marketing blog decided to be honest for once in their life:
http://blogs.amd.com/play/2012/01/11/early-results-achieved-with-amd-fx-processor-using-windows%C2%AE-7-scheduler-update/
Quote:
Our testing shows that not every application realizes a performance boost. In fact, heavily threaded apps (those designed to use all 8 cores), get little or no uplift from this hotfix – they are already maxing out the processor. In other cases, the uplift averages out to a 1-2 percent uplift. But heck, it is free performance, and this is the scheduler model that will be used in Windows 8 (along with some further enhancements), so why not add it to your list of downloads?

Do note that this is identical to the scheduler used in Windows 8. Windows 8 isn't going to save Bulldozer. Neither is Piledriver. Piledriver will be a 10-15% increase. That's not going to come close to Sandy Bridge nor will Sandy Bridge be even current at that point.
