Ahh well, then you have to figure in other factors. Like if you will be able to easily change settings on the machine or if your friend could reset the CMOS if it was found they needed to.

If it isn't my rig...i will OC to find the max that it won't fail in a few minutes of stress testing and then back off a decent amount and then stress test for at least 24 hours. That is just because I don't want to hand over a machine that is questionable. Then I will be relatively certain it is stable (no such thing as 100%...you leave any machine run 24/7 it will likely crash eventually even at stock) and the PSU isn't going to explode in a ball of fire and brimstone

Though most machines I build for people will just be boring old stock. Every now and then I get some one interested in buying parts to OC with though.

Thread Starter
thank you so much for your reply.
I'm gonna try adding a bit more voltage and stress test it for another 24 hours. hopefully it wont fail this time;)
otherwise I'll just decrease a few multipliers I guess:mad:

It's always been suggested you stress test for about 12 hours to make sure you're stable. You can do longer but you'll know whether or not probably much sooner than that.

Stress testing seems to be very mixed with what people consider "stable".

My thinking is a cpu at stock will keep running prime95 continously, so an overclocked cpu should be able to do 24hours.

The reason prime can fail after 12 hours is on a custom blend it hasn't done all the tests.

The worst case of stress testing I have ever seen was someone say they ran windows experience index and if it passed that it was stable lol

My personal thing which might be overkill for many on here is to run intel burn test initally for ten runs to test stability then run a custom blend with 90% ram usage for 24 hours
