HD 5850 (x3) TriFire?

Thread Starter
Well I would like to weigh the pros and cons of grabbing another 5850 to be thrown in for trifire...The only questions I have are does my motherboard support it (Sig) and would it be worth the upgrade? I mean these cards arent all that expensive anymore...

Another note: what are some recommendations you all have for a SINGLE monitor setup @ 1080p..I would like to know what a recommended single GPU and what a recommended dual gpu would offer...I want to be able to play ALL games at max on a single monitor....Thanks

The only thing that i can see is that your going to have a bottleneck with that cpu...

hmmmm what x4 do you have? like a 955? that you could overclock to get rid of most the bottleneck.

Maybe you won't get such a performance boost on average FPS, but for what I have seen on reviews your minimum FPS, which is what is important IMO, should raise.

Another PRO of that kind of setup is that I've seen many reviews saying that micro stuttering present in most dual card setups will no longer be seen.

So, if your motherboard supported it, it might be the way to go.
Unfortunately I don't think your motherboard supports tri fire. That third x4 lot can be used for a physX card for example, but I don't think the motherboard will allow tri fire, not even at x4 on all of the pci-e slots.

As for maxing all games on a single monitor, you probably can with a tri fire setup. Only possible drawback would be limited VRAM in titles like BF3 or games with texture mods. This means you would have to disable AA in bf3, for example.

you would need to get that sucker up to 4.0 and there still would be a bottleneck not a huge one but a noticable one i know you dont want to switch i see you really like amd but if your going for crossfire/sli or tri i would say intel is your best bet sorry

you should be able to get 4ghz out of it if you get a decent heatsink on it. there is definitely more room in that chip.

i think you'd be OK with your current CPU, but you should know that the third GPU added doesn't help as much as when you added the second. If I were in your shoes i would look into selling one or both of the GPUs and just going with one more powerful GPU.

Plus it seems that Crossfire and SLI are having more issues these days. You think it would be getting almost main stream, but it seems like there are more troubles today then there was a year ago.

If I was to buy a single GPU to play 1080P...I think i'd go with a 6970...or a GTX 580. A 6950 or 570/560ti might do the job too. You'll be fine as long as you don't want to max out Metro 2033

yea I agree there is so many more problems now a days.....So your saying that 4.0 on my 955 would be ok on Air cooling? I have an aftermarket cooler on there and as far as I know temps have been good....any programs that monitor cpu temps? also what is a GPU that you would recommend
