Thread Starter
yea I was looking at a 6950 2GB with the unlocker, so I would be able to open it up to a 6970...and down the road I would also be able to add another...Yea I have had my 5850s for about 3 years now, and they have been a beast on many many games...I have them slightly overclocked and they do run well...Anyone know which 6950 2GB has the unlocker?

Buy a 6950/70 used if you really can't wait for the 7000/600 serie... Really isn't worth the upgrade me think!

yea, I believe I will wait and see how the new 7XXX series fairs...it just seems that Nvidia ****s on ATI ...Nvidia cards especially the new cards look like they will smoke everything ATI puts out...I mean look at the 6990, that card is already being outdated...

Yea I agree with everyone. Sell those 5850s for like $150 a pop and grab a 6970.

Like I said in my earlier post, look for reference cards, those are your best bet for unlocking.

If you can get the third card cheap enough then it can be worth it. I think your PSU can handle it and I would not worry about the phenom not being fast enough as it should IMO if over clocked play most games well exceptions being very CPU intensive games like skyrim but even so there should not bee huge slow downs.

And even a x4 slot is enough for a 5850 if its a PCI-e 2.0 slot.

Edit: Here is a review with extensive 5850 trifire testing http://benchmarkextreme.com/Articles/Radeon%205850%20Trifire/P1.html

as far as i can tell you can't run tri-fire on that board: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3894#sp

get that confirmed before you consider it... if you can do it then i say go for it. as mentioned already, from what ive read - micro stuttering tends to go away with 3 cards and in games that support crossfire that will be quite a lot of graphics processing power you have there smile.gif

It is awesome, I was able to max all the graphics options in Crysis except AA, I had that set to x2. I can max out all of my games with a single 6590 (shader modded) except Crysis2. With my second 6950(unlocked Toxic) I have no problem running Crysis 2 maxxed out. keep in mind this is on a 1920x1080 display.

Save your money for the next graphics card upgrade you do. Tri Fire would be fun, but just hold off and put that money towards the next GPU, albeit the 8000 series, or whatever.
