PS3 USB Movies

Thread Starter
Hey everyone. I've been considering to buy a 32GB USB 2.0 flash drive so I can put some Blu-ray movies on it. Will it be possible to insert the usb into the PS3 and then browse the usb and watch the movie? (if yes, what files are available, and can it play files that are up to 20GB?)

I tried to insert a USB 2.0 4gb flash drive with a around 1gb .avi movie. I could find the folder where I had placed the file, but I couldn't see the .avi file. Why couldn't I do this?

So: What files can the PS3 play? Is there a maximum size for those files? Why couldn't I see the 1gb .avi file on the usb?

I have tried to press triangle and select "Display all", and I've also tried to create the folder PS3\VIDEO in the root of my USB.

Thanks,
Mathias

Hey man, I havent tried that method since my old fat PS3 died a while back, but I used to do streaming using a software called PS3 Media Server. That way, I saved some bucks in the HDD or USB drive. Perhaps you could look into it? If you are not going to load subtitles to a movie, you could handle it with a regular atom netbook. Its pretty easy to use. I'm sure if it can handle avi, mp4 and MKV files it could handle your blu ray files.

hmmmm that's weird the PS3 should be able to play .avi files. It's usually through the display all option. Here is a list of files the PS3 can play http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/video/filetypes.html

Thanks for your replies. I was planning to use subtitles, but I guess I can just "burn" them onto the video file.

@ Razorstorm I will look into that, as it would be nice to save some bucks there. I hope it won't lag when streaming large files then.

.avi is just a container, there's literally hundreds of completely different video codecs with the .avi extension.

Anyways the maximum file size you will be able to use is 4gb, due to the limits of the fat32 file system. You'll have to break the video into parts when you convert it to a codec the ps3 supports.

Essentially it's a pain to transfer HD on a thumb drive, especially if you don't want to step down to 720p quality.

If I use the PS3 Media, there won't be a file size limit, right? And will that be able to use .srt files as subtitles?

No, there won't be a size limit since you are streaming. Yes, you will be able to stream with and without SRT files. Srt files consume more CPU load. I did some testing back in 2009 and I had this dell mini 9, which was able to stream 720p files with no issues or lag (wired) but once I loaded the same file with subtitles, cpu load reached 100% and it was wayyyy laggy.

If you have a decent pc, even if old, like core 2 duo, you should be fine. Lagging in that case will come only, if you decide to go wireless, which could work, but at 10mbps, you will need to sacrifice way too much the quality of the video.

Of course I'm assuming you are playing MKV @ least 720p, which can be done wireless. @1080p, mkv can only be done at like 802N because 10mbs is not enough. AVI files should be a walk in the park for your PC

No, It wont lag. I recall streaming a file, which was 8gb and it was fine. You need to tweak the software thou if your CPU is not too fast, like increasing cache from 50mb to 500mb and going wired.
I did notice, that decreasing quality level in the video, while it make it easier to stream, put more load on your cpu so don't do that unless you know you can handle transcoding on the fly smile.gif
