Cooler for AMD FX-8120?

Thread Starter
Just bought the AMD FX-8120 and at idle it runs at 47'C, I haven't put it under pressure yet from fear of it overheating as it's maximum operating temperature is 60'C, any ideas on air or liquid cooling to keep it from going near that temperature? I am hoping to spend less than £30 but am willing to pay up to £50, thanks in advance.

First of all, your idle temps are WAY to high, even for the stock cooler. The first thing i would do is remount the cooler, using fresh thermal paste.
Under load your temps are going to spike way to high.

Ive never used it personally, but the best budget cooler is the Cool Master 212 plus.

For a few dollars more you can grab the Thermaltake Frio

It kept my 8120 @ 4.5ghz @ 31C idle, 49C Load.

Thank you so much guys, I will do that right away, I must admit I had trouble mounting the stock cooler which may have removed most of the paste. Thanks for the lightning fast responses as well, much appreciated smile.gif

@willibj sorry but can you put those coolers in order of which you think is the best please, including the water cooler, thank you.

Are there any videos showing how much thermal paste to apply which you recommend? I've seen a few and people use all sorts of amounts, from next to nothing to thick layers of the stuff.

Silver Arrow would be best, but I'm not 100% it will fit with the side fan, though it might sneak in.

Otherwise perhaps the Antec H20 620. It's not the best cooler there, but will perform in the middle of the pack of options listed, but it has the advantage of customizability in installation.

As far as i can tell, the NZXT Lexa S has 166mm of clearance for CPU heatsink without the side fan, and 141mm with the side fan. Whether or not any of these coolers are wide enough for it to intrude is another thing. You might need to google the case and cooler compatibility, hence why the Antec 620 is a good option, because it will absolutely fit, along with allowing for adding a fan in push/pull, and you can ghetto-rig the Antec H20 620 radiator in the drive bays to allow it to pull cool air in from the front, increasing your positive pressure intake and dropping CPU temps further with fresh-air cooling it (I did this and it has worked a treat, leaving me more room to add fans and keeping my motherboard area less cluttered).

Thoughts to consider.

But if budget is really tight, the Hyper 212+ is tried and tested. The temps won't be as good as other solutions, but you can add a second fan and it will get the job done allowing for a half-decent overclock.

Thanks for that; so if I got the Antec 620 I could mount the fan in the front below the drive bays?

Corsair H50, but same basic idea:

You have the fans pulling air in from the front through the rad and expelling the air into the case. It's not been a problem for my temps, but I have lots of intake fans and a big exhaust up top.

Oh so just mount it inside the case? Which do you think is better: Antec 620 or Corsair H60? They are similar prices and I have read reviews about the Antec and people are saying that the pipes burst and destroyed their machine, not sure how rare this is but I don't really want to take the risk.
