by learning a new OS i missed out? i highly doubt that. i am sure there are great things i miss out on each day but when you are married with kids, own 2 businesses and work over 70 hours a week you kinda run out of time to goof off for folding. in the time it would take me to learn linux i could have made enough money to buy 10 I7 machines and have them folding SMP just like my current I7 machines are. gotta figure what your time is worth and i know mine is worth more than some lame OS i will never use in the real world.

Not just an OS. An ethos, a sense of pride in the community, a sense of being connected to the hardware, the way it should be. A sense that you go against the flow and are not scared to try new options. A sense that you using this software makes a real difference in the real world. Give it a go, please.

Well aren't we a stubborn lad. Perhaps it has nothing you need. But guess what every website worthy of that name currently runs on? Linux. Sure, you're a typical computer user. you play games, you write word documents, you answer e-mail, and you get to indulge that secret paraplegic midget porn fetish you haven't told anyone about.

But Linux is the core of our network infrastructure, and wheelchairmidgets.xxx? Yea, that's running on Linux.

Joking aside, however, if you're ever into programming or networking, you're going to have to learn Linux. If you're not, you could've partaken in HPCS by simply following the quite literally screenshotted, step-by-step guide posted here on OCN. It takes all of 2 minutes. I don't give a rat's ass what business you're running, it isn't making enough money to buy $15,000's worth of hardware every 2 minutes.

And through all that, knowing your brain is still going "nurrrrrrr linux *sadface*", you could've at minimum held back from calling it "some lame OS". UNIX came before Apple or Microsoft. The man who made Linux is the reason we have computers. It's probably the most powerful OS (although I should say kernel) in existence, it just takes some learning to take advantage of it.

Sure you didn't mean Unix?

yeah, but truth is i just dont have time to learn it and use it daily. i sadly AM in the IT field and do work all day long on computers but guess what OS 99% of them run on... you guessed it, windows and the other 1% are Macs. its a PC world, sure linux runs in the background but if you want to do anything you need to know windows. i wanted to setup a few things and play around with the new 11 series of SBS but since i cant load a custom image that killed it. folding would have only been something to tinker around with. sure, i can load it up on a server here in a VM but i would rather HP flip the bill for the lights :-p

Not sure if the 5 invites are gone but if they are just request into the beta on their site. I got a response with 5 instances allowed a day later. Just sent in another request under my fiancées name too. On vacation till sunday but can hopefully get both up and folding when I'm back.
