[GIZ] Google’s Broken Promise: The End of "Don’t Be Evil" - Page 10

meh. I'm not hating on google specifically about this - but any monolithic company that is going to get into cloud services over the next 10-20 years deserves our scrutiny. Both for ethical reasons and the security of the operation. Just because google is a business you like doesn't make it somehow immune. For my part, google gives the same pat contrived answers when pressed by the government/press that any other mega-tech company gives (ms, apple...there are probably some others that are still kicking around). That fact alone means that people should hold them to a higher standard. Do they meet it? Maybe. Perhaps impractical, but I'd like the company that offers me cloud services in the future to hold just enough of my personal data to complete the tasks I want to streamline. When you get into these grey areas, I get nervous. But that's just me. I get that I'm in the minority.

Thanks Geritol!

I deleted my YouTube account a few weeks ago and am still in the process of migrating everything away from gmail.

Google has gotten far too big for anyone's good.

That's a silly question with an obvious answer.

Of course it's necessary.

Before now for example, your Google+ data wouldn't have been shared with Google Adsense - now it probably will and they will probably use keywords in your Google+ data to automatically push ads that are actually relevant to you, instead of generic random ads that might interest you.

Isn't that... good? I think this is just Gizmodo trying to gain media attention.

Pretty much. It's just that all your info will be in 1 database and be accessible by all Google Services, when it used to be a separate database for each service and only accessible by each respective service.

They're trying to pass that off as 'GOOGLE BIG COMPANY NOW, THEY WILL TRACK OUR EVERY MOVE OH NOOO!'

Yea, I'm not really seeing any reason for me to actually care all that much. If anyone here has a Facebook and is complaining about this; you may want to rethink your priorities... rolleyes.gif

Honestly, people already using Google services before this were already entrusting their info to Google. This doesn't really affect the majority who have decided to do so.

This just makes it easier for the Patriot Act to spy on you with an easy to monitor eavesdropping program. Not really worried about Google having my info as I know they're competent enough to safeguard it unlike Sony. I'm more worried about my own government spying on me because they can, without a warrant.
