OC'ed GTX470 - Blackscreen on Furmark

Hi guys,

I have a bit problem with my gtx 470 , I tried oc to 850core 1700memory with 1,1volt and its cooled with gelid cooler + awesome case airflow so I get temps like 38 idle to 60-65 when playing bfbc 2 or crysis 2 and everything worked fine. I played bfbc2 for like 3 hours without single problem , crysis about 1 hour no problem same as 3dmark 11, vantage , heaven , sanctuary , tropical .... but when I start furmark its like .. 30sec, temps go up, but nothing horrible (75 or something) and something goes -> black screen . Than I have to turn pc off and on and evrything works again.

+I have 1000W Coolermaster and single gtx 470 so it cant be PSU issue .
+When I tried 570core and got screen frozen in heaven benchmark (but I get this ... too high oc .. not enough volts)
Anybody knows what could be wrong ?

Thx in advance.

Try decreasing the core clock or increasing the voltage.

Have you got cooling on your VRMs? It sounds like it's hitting the current limit and overcurrent protection is shutting down the card.
Mine do the same but not at 1.1V.
If it is the OCP you might find your overclock is less unstable with slightly less voltage.

Edit: By cooling I mean some sort of heat sink, I'm guessing your gelid cooler has fans blowing down towards the PCB but the VRMs on my cards get really hot even with small heatsinks on them.

EDIT2: Try running OCCT with error detect enabled, it should detect errors very well but it draws a little less power than furmark so if you are hitting your card's current limiter in furmark it might not trigger it.
It still loads the GPU to 100% but it will draw less electrical power is what I mean.

I tried even 600Mhz on core (default) with 1.1volts and its till same , furmark ... +-minute and blackscreen comes say hello .
But confusing thing is that I just played BF 3 for about 2 hours and no problem, it looks so far that only problem is with furmark and occt its doing same thing.

Also confusing thing is that in GTX470 main topic , other ppl has also 1.1 and more volts and it looks like its working for them fine.

I was also thinking about OCP and I heard somewhere that is someway unlockable if I am right.

This is gelid cooler btw

Well, overheating VRMs shouldn't be a problem then but I wouldn't rule out OCP because it really sounds like that could be the problem.
It's not just normal instability or you couldn't run a lower voltage at the same clocks and the GPU is unlikely to just freak out at 1.1V.
I'd be about 90% sure that it is the OCP.

And may I disable OCP + do u think its good idea ? I reed few months ago about ppl disabling this on 570 and than their cards ended up in heaven frown.gif

Well if ure card is stable in gaming and other programs, why bother going through all this trouble for one stressing program?

As far as I know it's a hard mod on the 470, not a software thing. From what I remember it involves soldering a pin on a tiny IMC and I was 100% sure that if I tried it I would kill my card so I didn't do it. axesmiley.png

If there is a way to disable the OCP I'd be curious to hear about it but I think you might be stuck with what you've got.
It's probably not a good idea anyway as you won't get that much more out of your card beyond the default current limit and you'd be increasing the risk that always comes with overclocking.

Because its not final oc , I would like to tweak a bit more and see what works best, but method : change one setting and than play 5 hours and if its ok change another ... looks like quite a long run frown.gif

Well, you could try sticking a high airflow fan on the cooler temporarily, if you can lower the temperature of the card slightly it might help.
I only say this because the better of my two GTX470s trips the OCP at 1.137-1.15V (forget which but it can run OCCT on 1.125V so it's okay up to that) on my normal watercooling but when my rad was in a bucket of ice it could go as high as 1.2V for Heaven runs.
Maybe a better fan would give your card enough breathing room to clock a little higher, it's worth a shot if you've got one lying around but if you don't it's probably not worth buying a fan as it isn't guaranteed to help.

Edit: I mean two fans, or one to get air to the cooler from outside your case. 75C seems a little high for a 470 with a good aftermarket cooler unless it's very quiet. I know my twin frozr card folded all day at 850MHz core and it stayed at around 60-65C.
