PCI Express 3.0 Has Zero Performance Incentive for Radeon HD 7970: Tests

I'm yet to see any reviewer try a comparison of a PCI-e 3.0 crossire 7970 vs PCI-e 2.0 crossfire 7970 both at 5760x1080 or higher. Have you seen any of those results anywhere? The tests that all these guys ran so far are usually at 1080p or at most 2560x1440, which is a lot lower than 5760x1080. Like I said, I agree with reviews that at 1080p the PCI-e 2.0 is perfectly fine, but I think at eyefinity resolutions PCI-E 3.0 could help a lot.

All right, looks like for sure there is something going on with Crossfire and Intel Sandy Bridge (or Z68 chipset, dunno). I just switched back to i7-2600k and decided to record some frame times
This is single monitor, crossfire. Looks pretty good but a few dropouts.
338

This is eyefinity. Complete stutter fest!!! Unplayable. (the white dots are the actual fps)
338

Now, when I had FX-8120 installed, I did some recordings too and the eyefinity frametimes were pretty much like how the single monitor intel setup looks like, except of course the fps was lower (around 40-42 or so).

So what the heck is going on here? The rest of the system is exactly the same, i switched 2 different z68 motherboards already and they perform exactly the same. Is it a z68 chipset? Is it 8x/8x bottlenecking? Is it AMD's crappy code? Who knows smile.gif

I might have to wait until Ivy Bridge to find out, unless of course I just decide to try to switch (yet again) to i7-3820 and its 40 PCI-E 3.0 lanes.

Switch = Latency thinking.gif

Try full board with native PCIe lanes without switch.

Or raise PCIe clock to 101, 102, 103....

Raise PCIe Voltage.......

All right, so here' the summary of all the setups I've tested:

RAM is always the same 8gb, but I've always tried it both at 1333 and 1600 Mhz
I've test i5-2400 at 3.1, 3.7, and 3.8 Ghz, i7-2600k at 3.4, 3.8, and 4.4 Ghz with two different motherboards - GA Z68XP-UD3 and MSI Z68A-GD65.
I've also tested an AMD system with FX-8120 and ASUS Crosshair V, ran that CPU at stock 3.1 and 3.6 and 3.8 Ghz.

Every time I swapped the configuration I did a full reinstallation of windows 7. For the AMD system I applied the hotfixes that change the way Windows 7 does the scheduling, although that seemed to have little difference as expected.

For my eyefinity configuration I have 3 monitors - 120Hz Samsung S23A950D and two side Acers S231HL which are both 60hz. I've also tried to use all three 60Hz monitors, but that did not change the behavior at all as expected, but I just wanted to rule that out.

I've tried disabling all the power saving features and hyper threading, etc. Again did not affect the results at all.

So here's the actual problem. If you look at the screenshots in my post above, whenever I run eyefinity with an intel system I get major stuttering in the games I play - Battlefiled 3 and pCARS. I haven't tried other games so I cannot say anything about it. I know both cards are usually running at 99% load when I run eyefinity, but they also run at 99% when I just use my single 120Hz monitor. The only way to fix the problem on an intel system is to have vsync enabled and artifically limit the FPS using a frame limiting program like Dxtory (or in BF3 there is a console command for that). If you set that limit just below the average FPS, the frame stuttering disappears and gameplay is smooth. If for some reason the FPS drops just below that limit for that period of time the suttering comes back.

When I ran the AMD system the suttering in eyefinity was mostly gone, however that is not an ideal solution as the CPU is much weaker and on single screen my framerate is about 30-40% lower than with an Intel system, so I'd like to get it to work right.

So I'm pretty much trying to figure out what's going on here. Why is that in an Intel setup even though I can run both cards perfectly fine loaded at 99% on a single monitor, when I run eyefinity it stutters. Does this have to do with the amount of bandwith available and 8x/8x really causing this? Will upgrading to LGA 2011 solve this issue? Or is this something with Intel CPU/AMD Crossfire + Eyefinity?

I have to mention that before 7970s I had 6990+6970 and the behavior was exactly the same - I only tried it with an i5-2400 @ 3.8 Ghz though.

Thanks!

Again, when I recorded the video using Afterburner's video recording and replayed it back - video was silky smooth at all times, so I'm not sure what the deal is here.

it's microstutter!

OK. I am convinced now. Running two cards @x8/x8 will have performance hit at Eyefinity resolution above 2560x1600. Sorry, never ran @x8/x8/x8/x8 to realize that, always with @x16/x16/x16/x16.

Go for fullboard like X79-UD7 or X79-R4E. Don't cheap out on PSU and motherboard with such high end system.

That's the highest end system available today. There's no other options. I need motivation to put the 3960X + 7970s in one piece. It's been more than a month other than the 7970s (2 weeks). I need to get another set 4 screws for the LGA2011 block. Don't know how I lost it mad.gif

Ok, I'm pretty much convinced now that it must be the x8/x8 performance hit that is causing this somehow plus most likely unoptimized game code plus beta 7970 drivers. For example, I just tested Serious Sam 3 and Just Cause 2 (this one crashes, but it's a known 7970 bug), and both games run flawlessly in eyefinity with crossfire enabled.
