[Solved]

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

Looking to upgrade my server's storage array from my current 3TB RAID5 (4x Samsung F3 1TB + HighPoint RocketRaid 2300) to a 8-12TB RAID6 (Using a PERC 6/i)

This array will be purely for storage and redundancy of my data (Media, Install files, backups etc), no applications or operating systems will be installed.

What HDD's would you recommend to use, I'm leaning towards being cost effective as performance isn't a major concern as it only streams/transfers media over Gigabit LAN or to other internal drives.

I also don't need this solution ASAP, as I'm willing to wait for HDD prices to recede much like the flood waters themselves.

The drives I've been looking at are the Samsung F4EG - HD204UI, but I keep seeing people mentioning TLER and CCTL and these are new concepts to me and I don't fully understand their impact.
I've heard these drives need a firmware patch and that's about all I know so far.

So what drives would you recommend for this setup and what else do I need to know?

Regards,
- R34P3R

TL:DR
Upgrading RAID5 to RAID6, storage purposes only (No OS), best drives to use keeping cost low?

The corruption bug with the HD204UI only happens under specific circumstances: http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/smartmontools/wiki/SamsungF4EGBadBlocks

I've not heard of any TLER issues with the HD204UI being run in RAID. In fact, I set up a fileserver for a friend that uses 5 x HD204UI drives in a Linux software RAID 5 configuration - no problems at all. You should be good to go with the RAID 6.
