Need Emergency Help Please

Thread Starter
I'm putting my build together and I've hit a major road block right out the gate. I have an ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3 motherboard and an i5 2500k processor. I'm trying to install the processor but when I try to close the tray over it it won't close and I feel like putting any more pressure will break it. The tray closes fine when I test it with just the protective cap on, but it's unable to close with the processor in. On the inside of the metal cover are two bulges of metal and these are digging into the processor. I can already see scratch marks from the slight pressure I used. I've tried everything to get this to close and it just won't work. I called ASUS tech support and the smug son of a ***** sat there and told me the processor was the problem and that I needed to call Intel. The processor looks fine. Looking from a side view when I try to close the cover it is slanted forward instead of flat. Does anyone have any ideas? If it helps I can try to take some pictures and post them.

I think pictures would help.

I put yellow circles where the metal bulges are

700

Here's the scratch marks it put on my processor

700

And this is as far as it'll close before it takes too much pressure

Edit, just saw your pics..

Yeah, the metal casing should not be leaving marks in your CPU like that......

Edit: Right? I told the ASUS guy about the bulges in the metal casing and he gave me the whole "Our motherboards are tested multiple times to ensure quality yada yada yada" I asked him if it was possible for the metal casing to be deformed and he said absolutely not. Then he told me he couldn't help me and to call Intel support.

I'm not saying that the gouges are right but on all three of my I7's it made a crunch noise and took a bit of force.
Can you take a pic of the cpu sitting in the socket with the clasp open?

Oh you won't break it. And any 775 proc and or board (I went around the block a few times back in the day.) All achieved the same scratches. Pressure was absolutely necessary. I bet the rest of you have em' too, but it probably just looks like caked goop.

Large amount of force is relative, especially when you've repaired semis and dump trucks. the cpu IHS is far more durable than that little bit of aluminum. You'll break the socket before you break that processor.

It looks like your processor is lining up correctly, but just to make sure, the notches on the processor are lining up with the keys on the socket, right? Check to make sure there's nothing in the way, either on the processor side or the socket side. If it's all clear, then just have at it. Every time I install a processor, I break out into a cold sweat because it seems like I'm going to break the thing with all the pressure. I've yet to have a real problem, though.

I'll have to check mine here in the next week or so.
