GTX 580 OC Questions from a Noob

Thread Starter
hey everyone, just upgraded to a GTX 580 (1.5gig) from a 560

I have an EVGA GTX 580 SC, stock (over)clock at 797

Using Haven benchmark, Stock settings @ 1080
Using a universal waterblock on the 580

Stock .797 averaged 55.3fps
.850 ghz gave me an average of 55.6fps
I tried running .900, but it crashed halfway though Haven

So... my question, is what is the point of overclocking if i'm only gonna see a .3fps increase?

Or am i doing something wrong?

Using the EVGA precision tool, my .850 is as follows (using the auto adjust for the shader and mem)
Core Clock: 850
Shader Clock: 1700
Mem Clock: 2025

Stock
Core: 797
Shader: 1594
Mem: 2025

are these the results i'm going to expect to see? (first time builder, so learning tons of new things)

any tips, suggestions, ideas, questions for me are all welcome.

Hmm that doesn't seem right, can you try 825MHz?

What's your stock voltage on that card?

I have a feeling that's your problem being set to low for a decent over clock.

What over clocking utility are you using?

I use EVGA Precision since I'm not over volting. MSI Afterburner is another good tool to OC volts and clocks.
I have the exact EVGA GTX 580 SC card. Voltages may vary between cards.

My stock voltage is 1.0880mV. I run my GPU at stock voltage and obtain an easy 16% OC on Memory / Shader and 5% Memory. I've learned that memory doesn't really increase FPS more than it highers heat temps and keeps the OC on Core from achieving better results.

I'm running my EVGA GTX 580 SC at 900 Core / 1800 Shader / 2075 Memory on a 24/7 setting with my stock 1.0880mV.

I'd suggest those specs for you as well. It's a nice OC bump without putting stress on the GPU and a safe OC. thumb.gif

This. bump that voltage a little higher sounds like your not getting enough power!!! thumb.gif

ah, figured it out guys, i'm a tard, i totally forgot about upping the voltage, so now i'm at 950 core core at 1.15v, should be safe since i'm WC and temps topped around 50°c, and according to haven benchmard, I saw a +5fps increase.

Since i'm WC, i'm really thinking of doing the custom bios and seeing if i can up the voltage to 1.175 and hit 1ghz.... ideas on that?
Go for it. my 580 is under water and i can reach near 1ghz with custom bios allowing voltage to go up to 1.213. that is the highest you can go with the reference power delivery circuitry.

i wouldnt use universal waterblocks, i killed a card using one because you arent cooling all the little parts that get hot, go buy a real block before you kill the card.

Just an FYI precision does include a module to overvolt your cards now, glad it worked out for you OP.

Not to hi-jack thread but since OP issue was resolved...

Jacob - is there anyway to tweak voltage in Presicion without the pop up box request when windows restarts? It's the only down fall to it. I love the fact I don't have to resort to AB anymore to bench and though I personally don't need a voltage bump 24/7 is there any way for those who do to avoid the pop up box on window start up?

Do you mean UAC?

As of now unfortunately the only way is to disable UAC, we will look into any alternate methods.
