Oddly enough, ppl who buy launch day/night (when prices are MSRP) aren't gouged. But, current pricing on the 7970's is hardly unusual.
What may be troublesome is that AMD seems to have stopped playing the competitive pricing game with Nvidia. Don't really blame them since Nvidia was selling GTX 580's well despite them being stupidly overpriced (30% more than a GTX 570 for 10%-15% more performance). If you think about it, even if AMD set MSRP for the 7970 as $450, they'd still be out of stock, but they'd have made a ton less money.
AMD tried the competitive price game with NVIDIA for several generations, NVIDIA didn't lose significant sales and still sold overpriced cards thanks to the Halo effect. As a result, AMD probably decided to forget that and just price according to the market.

I think 450.00 would be a more reasonable price for this card but I do see your point in what you are saying.

Perhaps it's the carbon fiber sticker that adds the $20 over the standard model. wink.gif

I would love to hear from some of the 7970 owners in all this.
Do you feel the performance warrants the price you paid?

In Denmark the cheapest HD7970 will set you back 760$ to 900$ now thats ridiculous, even though they were sold out in 1 day in pretty much every online store

Well personally I think the 580 is way overpriced for what if offered. It just worries me that amd is playing the same game. They priced it as the faster BASED on the 580's price. I understand why they are but as I have said before the trend is scary.

Its smart business. If people have the money to spend on it - good for them - glad to see them keeping performance moving up. When performance doesn't increase and we just get new coolers and jacked up prices then I'll complain. This is new tech and you're gonna pay for it - nothing new here.

I bought my first 5850 a day after release for $299 USD...a few weeks later they were selling the same card for around $340. Unless they thought no one was going to buy them it is true they were following the MSRP at launch at least.

( I wanted a 5870...but I could never make it through check out before they were sold out...managed to get a 5850 though)
