New MSI 7970 @ Newegg..... Prices have me worried - Page 4

Things are worth whatever people will pay for them. It's not a matter of "that card is overpriced". If people are buying the card and it's out of stock, it isn't overpriced.

When people stop buying them at $550 the price will come down until they people them again, and so on. That's the way the world works.

If you want to blame anyone blame nvidia. There fastest single gpu is the 580 3gb and its 550.00. The 7970 is 15-20% faster amd would be fools to sell it for anything less then what they are currently asking. You have to pay to play sorry.

Are you happy with your card? What did you have before?

Well I will agree with you there, you do have to pay to play. Its just that at the current rate of gpu's it wont be long at all before the gpu cost more than the rig itself and in somecases already does.

AMD is taking a strategy of lower volume and higher profit margin for the 7970 release. If they had come out with the entire 7xxx series at once I think you would see lower prices. For example, it seems like they intentionally delayed the 7950 to avoid the whole phenomenon where most people bought 6950 and unlocked (or at least overclocked). Right now they are charging for the extra performance over gtx 580, but the gouging can't last forever. Supply will eventually catch up to demand, especially when other cards begin to compete (keplar, 7950, etc).

I think we can chalk it up to the fact that gtx 580 and hd 6970 have both been out for quite a while with little price change. A lot of people were ready and willing to jump to the new fastest single gpu and that is surely keeping prices high.

They do. Same price as an older gtx580 but performs way better.

Had a 6970 before. I paid for two and I live in Australia, so it was alot more than $550. Comes to something like $1500 US dollars after shipping for two cards. I'm happy
