silver kill coil, not working - Page 11

Corrosion and oxidation is a single and unique phenomenon. cheers.gif

The valence number of the copper decrease. Could be the block giving electrons to the polyvinyl chloride thus forming Cu2+ and then reacting with the water.

The fact that the material dissolved in dilute acide suggests that it is a salt. The fact that it is black suggests that it is either (or both) Ag2O and/or CuO -- both are oxidation products. Even though you did not have air bubbles in your loop, you may have had dissolved air -- especially if you had turbulence where water and air mixed (such as in a reservoir). The presence of the silver coil created a very mild galvanic current, which may have helped the oxides to plate out. The current was definitely not enough to cause pitting.

I need to brush up on corrosion inhibitor chemistry. I recall one chemical -- the name escapes me -- that should be ideal It will likely be expensive.

Aka feser lol

Same stuff the use in car radiators...for the same reasons.

Look up "water wetter" and u will see a billion posts on adding it to a loop, well in 2002 atleast. It was all the rage as anti corrosive but had a few huge draw backs: gunk and staining.

Or was the picture just taken up side down?

Ethylene glycol itself has no ability to inhibit corrosion or scavenge oxygen. However, many (if not most) commercial engine coolant formulations contain corrosion inhibitors. From other posts on this forum, I am aware that several water coolers add a bit of commercially available engine coolant to their computer's cooling water. This provides them with a bit of the inhibitor.

The specific class of chemicals that I was trying to remember is triazole - Specifically benzotriazole or salts of benzotriazole. These are effective at preventing corrosion in systems containing copper and copper alloys.

I discovered that B&H Photo/vide (my favorite place to shop for photography equipment) sells a 10 gm vial for $4.95. Now, I do not recommend that everyone rush off and buy this stuff -- although I'm sure that B&H would be pleasantly surprised by the increase in sales of this stuff. For the benzotriazole to work properly, it probably needs to be combined with a surfactant and possibly other chemicals to improve its solubility in water. The triazole works by actualy passivating the metal surface.

And, further to my prior comment, I believe that it is very important to minimize air/water turbulence in your cooling systems, in order to minimize dissolved air content in the cooling water.

I am going to suggest this might be the fault of incorrect solder used during radiator manufacturing that is exposed to your loop and eventually caused corrosion issues.

If ethylene glycol does not inhibit corrosion, then why is Feser selling it as a corrison blocker?
