Prime95 rounding error on one core of 3930K 4.9Ghz, up voltage, or look at RAM?

I just finished a 15 hour blend test using Prime95 64 bit V26.6, Build 3. Cores 1,3,4,5 and 6 passed, but core 2 failed after 6 hours with an error stating "Rounding was 0.5, expected 0.4". My temps are more than fine at 4.9Ghz, but in offset mode my Vabsolute is 1.400 - 1.408 using CPU-Z. I am not really keen on upping the voltage, but the PLL seems to be a huge stabilizing factor, so I can up that and try again. Is there any reason to suspect this is a RAM issue and not a CPU stability issue? I'm just doing the regular blend test even though i have 32GB RAM, so I would not think this is really stressing the memory.

Any advice, other than to try random stuff until it works?

Rounding errors are mainly memory errors,So start there.

Thanks, that gives me a good starting point. +rep.

The bios is reading all of my memory info correctly from he XMP profile, other than the speed, which it read as 1333 and i changed to 1600. I havent touched the voltage or manually entered the latency settings. Any suggestions of which to start with?

  • Disabling Channel Interleaving and Rank Interleaving on GIGABYTE LGA2011 boards can help performance.
  • If you have trouble hitting 2400MHz try using BLCK dividers
  • Keep VCore and VCCSA(IMC or System Agent voltage) as close together(.4-.3v) as possible for maximum stability, this is recommended by Intel.
  • Try lowering your CPU OC to OC memory higher
  • Increase current limits to the QPI/VTT and System Agent/IMC
  • Increase the switching frequency of the QPI/VTT, the System Agent/IMC, the DRAM Voltages
  • Remember you need to change both setting for DRAM Voltages if you have all DIMMs populated
  • Denser the memory or even more sticks, the harder it is to OC.
  • If your memory is rated 2400mhz and you cannot get 2400mhz to work, it could be your CPU.

Thanks, I had read that post previously, but didnt pay much attention to the XMB note or some other info, since Im not OCing the memory right now.

I upped my VTT a tiny bit more to match more closely with the VSA and upped the dram voltage to 1.52, which seems to solve a lot of issues by itself. I'm running memtest86+ now, but its taking quite a while due to all the RAM I guess. 69% complete after 1.25 hours and no errors yet. I will test prime95 again overnight.

I ran into this a bit ago overclocking my sniper from 1600 to 1866: here are some things I had to do.

Loostened the timings from 9 9 9 24 to 10 10 10 25: yes I know I probably could fine tune them in some parts, but it was the quickest route to stability and eventually I will tinker with the individual timings.

Typically when going up one divider (i.e. 1600 to 1866 etc...) you will need about .1v to get stable. In the past two sets of memory I have used, thats been the case. In the case of my sniper, I needed to go from 1.25 to 1.35. Also, I found I was still getting rounding errors probably 3 to 4 hours max, into the test, so the last thing I had to check was VCCIO so I went to 1.10 and that gave me stability and 24 hours prime stable. Now, you may just be able to get away with a voltage increase plus a little push on VCCIO. But, for the sake of getting stability, I would just say put a little increase on all those factors mentioned, test again, and if you pass, you can back off on each given setting till you get instability, and just reverse direction.

Also, you are using 32gb of ram, that in itself should require a small VCCIO bump, especially if you are overclocking the ram too. And since the IMC is on the chip, the nature of the beast just might call for you to back your overclock down a bit.

What was your last stable overclock and how far did you pass prime?

11 threads were fine for the 15 hours I let the blend test run, but core 2 (thread 3 I believe) failed around 5.5 hours into the test. The second thread on core 2 was fine. This was my first attempt at a blend test longer than an hour, as I just gave up getting 5Ghz stable without going nuts on the vcore. The OC right now is 4.9Ghz with no OC to the RAM or GPU.

I think an early fault on one thread will hide instability if the stress test is run longer. Since one thread died the CPU is only being stressed at about 91 percent (11/12) of it's potential; therefore you cannot really say that all the CPU is stable with the exception of that one thread because the activity and stability of each hyperthreaded core has an affect on every other core.

I agree. I'm going to re-run it tonight and see how it does. I changed the memory settings from XMP to auto in the bios and it picked up my correct speed setting without me having to force it, so I'll start there with a bit more voltage, if I get another error tonight, I'll change the settings that GG88 recommended and try again tomorrow night. My ram is XMP 1.2, but my bios recognizes XMP 1.3 and states to use memory with an XMP 1.3 profile when I select the XMP 1.2 option...so, who knows...maybe Auto will do the trick.
