Cores? That's so 20th century. We're going to have quantum APUs in a few years that will be more powerful that the best consumer computer you can buy today in a size you can only see under a microscope.

The next logical step is to change materials. The perfect material is graphene. We already know that some graphene designs produce little heat and because they are flat crystals, stacking transistor layers (for a true 3D chip) is possible. Further, power consumption is lower and theoretical max clocks are 50-100x higher (makes you wonder if AMD wasn't right when they designed a microarchitecture that loves extra speed(and actually scales at nearly 1:1)).
Intel will "lead the way" for the next 4-6 years, but when they are forced to move to the next thing, all the patents will be owned by the IBM alliance. The real long-term loser here is Intel (because they spent so much money on expanding current technology instead of spending more on future tech).
They can still go below 11nm though... at least that's what they have in mind already... with iii-v stuff by 2015...2017 2019...indium antimonide stuff?

The cost of each die shrink is getting higher. The cost of 16nm will likely be 50-100% more than 22nm. At smaller nodes, little things like quantum tunneling become huge issues.

If the IBM alliance were to go from an 11nm silicon to a 65nm graphene, the difference in the clockspeed, power consumption, and heat output of the processor would give much more of a performance edge than moving to 8nm would.

Its been mentioned previously in this thread but IBM created Intel the behemoth it is now.

Intel could do well to have a REAL competitor back in its market segment. I'd buy another IBM chip in a minute.

Actually, as the original x86 architecture has been around for well over 20 years, it's not subject to patent claims. Newer extensions (x86-64 and potentially a lot of the newer extensions) might be, but just about anyone can make a new x86 processor. It just won't have all of the efficiency of the modern ones in terms of instruction sets, or register addressing that x86-64 brought to the table.

Wait, what? IBM has more experience than Intel in making CPUs, just not recent experience in the desktop sector. Intel's Itanium was a complete failure, whereas IBM has been making server chips (and similar) for a long time. You're just looking at one section of a very large market, and extrapolating data to cover the whole thing. IBM may not be as "successful" as Intel, but they still make large profits and invest an awful lot into broader research areas than Intel seem to.
