Installation Data - BACKUP

post #1 of 5
Thread Starter
I am manually doing a lot of other things with my new system. So I figured I might as well manually backup data as well.

This is my setup.
C:\ - SSD - 32GB
R:\ - 2xHDD RAID 1 - 750GB
B:\ - HDD - 160GB (Removed after backups)

C:\Users\ <====> R:\System\Users\
C:\ProgramData <====> R:\System\ProgramData
These two above, they were installed there using an unattend file; nothing else worked to get them there.

C:\Program Files\ <====> R:\System\Program Files\
C:\Program Files (x86)\ <====> R:\System\Program Files (x86)\

NOTE: <====> means a junction
cmd>mklink /? for more info

I created junctions for users and programdata incase of dumb software developers hard-coding locations.

Those are my directories. I am not worried about Program Files being cleared out during a clean installation. However I fear that users or program data might. I want to safely and without looping in the directories by following every link.
Microsoft's stupid link loops they've made, make using the command line a little bit difficult to copy things.. I want to make batch files

So those are my concerns, this is what I want to have and am not sure how to get there.
R:\Data\BACKUP\SOURCE\
R:\Data\BACKUP\COPY\

What I want to do
I want to create a batch file to copy "SOURCE" to "COPY" without creating an infinite loop and causing me headache trying to delete the resulting directory tree.

Just to finish connecting the dots here, and make it clear. I want to have links to various directories inside of source.

End Result
I want to be able to clean install from a clone image I've made of a base install.
Run a different batch for restoring and have all that installation data go onto the system (I would be doing this from a repair disk)
Reboot and use my windows installation as if nothing ever happened.
I will be making periodic backups of my COPY folder and moving it to my offline backup drive. I will be then listing backups according to date, only on the backup drive though.

What I need to know.
I need to know all the possible locations of installation data. I mean any bits of information that Windows uses to say.. "yea okay that is an installed application / driver."
All directories with...
Settings / Configuration Data
Installation Information
Program Data
anything else that will help the transition.

I hope I've typed this clearly for everybody to understand.

You wamt to make a Windows Install Disk that includes all your programs, settings and configurations?

If so, installing to any computer other than the one coveredd by the OS's EULA is illegal.

Or am I missing something?

Also, there are quite a few commercial programs thta will accomplish what you want. But then perhaps you just like "mesing around in boats" (which I completely understand)?

What? Messing around in boats? Are you saying I am messing around with my OS in the same way trying to pee off the side of a row boat is messing around in a boat?

I am talking about back ups... NOT deployment strategies or pirating..
What applications will back up the type of information for me? Also if you don't know what directories have the type of data I am talking about then how would you know if these applications do so successfully?

Whoa there. No offense ment.

Kenneth Grahame, The Wind in the Willows, Chapter 1:

Is it so nice as all that?" asked the mole, shyly...

"Nice? It's the only thing," said the Water Rat Solemnly, as he leaned forward for his stroke. "Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing -- absolutely nothing -- half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats."

"Simply messing...about in boats -- or with boats... In or out of 'em it doesn't matter. Nothing seems to matter, that's the charm of it. Whether you get away, or whether you don't; whether you arrive at your destination or whether you reach somewhere else, or whether you never get anywhere at all, you're always busy, and you never do anything in particular; and when you've done it there's always something else to do, and you can do it if you like, but you'd much better not."

"Look here! If you've really nothing else on hand this morning, supposing we drop down the river together and have a long day of it.?

Would a disk clonning program such as Acronis accomplish your task?

Sorry, I didn't get the reference. However the rest is still valid I feel. I have seen a lot of people on forums questioning my motives and alluding to piracy. 350$ is certainly not piracy in my books.. no that is highway robbery.

I am already using clonezilla, it does do what I need it to. However I am going for the ultra over-overkill. I mostly just want to learn how to do it so that I can say I can, not to anybody in particular.. I just kind of want to learn how Windows stores this information so I know how to back it up in case the system didn't boot or something of the sort.

You could say in fact, that I am messing about with boats.
