Welcome to your newest obsession! The OCN Forums are filled with useful and useless information.

As for upgrading your Optiplex GX270 all I have to say is good luck. If its the SFF version
300
you will quickly learn that the capacitors between the processor socket and the rear I/O panel jacks tend to get very warn due to a lack of cooling and air circulation. This results in busted caps.(Keep a look out for oozing material)
399
When that happens you have to replace the entire motherboard. Also the type of stock cooling fan used on the SFF GX270 was horrible and expensive to replace with a high failure rate. Not to mention noisy.
300
These SFF cases had some of the worst cooling I have ever seen. I have quite a bit of experience with the GX260 and 270 lines as they were used here at the hotel I work at. We used them at the front desk and had many of them fail at one time or another. I believe that you will only be able to max the RAM out at MAYBE 2GB. Processors are typically lower to mid ranged Pentium 4's. Anything higher with speed up the Capacitor and Cooling Fan issue I mentioned above.

All that being said above I would not recommend gaming on that machine as even World of Warcraft was a struggle for it overall.

The most important thing in determining your build is your total budget. Thats a guideline of what you're going to pick up.
I can tell you this much the #1 thing you dont want to go cheapo on is a power supply. And there are some great articles here on which ones to get. Motherboard would be the #2 thing to not go cheap on.

Lol this. The Dell Dimension 4600 went down in history as having one of the most inadequate power supplies ever put into a machine. Mine was loud, cheap, and failed JUST after the warranty period, though most failed earlier, and Dell refused to honor their warranties.

Just curious, how wide is yours? Does it look like this?
360

Or this?

In that case, it's standard MATX as far as I know. If you intend to get a new OS (Windows 7), you won't need a Dell motherboard: any brand will do.

Also, if you win the lottery and want to make a monster of a Dell, you should look at this thread.

Yup. General motherboard sizes: Extended ATX (E-ATX), ATX, Micro ATX, Mini ITX (Just ITX). If your Dell case is like mine, its MATX.
