What's the best way/program to back up my current HD?

Thread Starter
Basically my HD is failing and I'm in the midst of getting it replaced. I have an external I can back up to; my question is, what's the best way to back up my entire computer and have it exactly as it is on my new hard drive when it comes in? documents/videos are easy copy and paste jobs, but programs that have roots into the registry obviously aren't as easy. Is Windows backup a good option? Or can anyone recommend a good 3rd party program as well?
