Why do you want your own DNS Server? If you need to ask its probably beyond your capabilities....

These might help..

Either Windows Server, or Linux. Unless you have internal servers or a domain, why do you need an internal dns server? Also, what OSes will be using this DNS server?

Hi there,

I've got a DNS server running here in my house. It serves the internal network, as well as my website. I used to use BIND for Linux. It was great doing all the code for it in Ubuntu Server. There's a great tutorial here.

If you want something that's easy, I'd recommend using Windows Server 2008 DNS. After a few months of using BIND on Linux, I moved to Windows Server DNS, as it was much easier to manage. BIND for Linux was a great project, and I learnt a lot about DNS along the way, but I've now moved to Window Server DNS, and it serves my needs perfectly.

So for short, If you want a great project, and want to learn about DNS. Go with BIND for Linux. If you want something that's easy to set up and manage, go down the Windows Server path.

Hope this helped. Josh.

dnsmasq is likely a bit more simplistic to start off with if you want to run a Linux server.

Tiny dns + Dns cahce is what we use on all our work servers. Its genneraly more "secure". There is quite a few guides out there as well
