I'd say a stand alone because my computer wouldn't be the only place I'd be listening to music but I wouldn't completely mark a sound card off the list.

FiiO E9 should be fine for that. If you want something that is better for more headphones, particularly lower-impedance and more sensitive ones, the DIY Objective2 (O2) is cheaper if made yourself but not too much more expensive if bought assembled from JDSLabs for around $150.

What this guy said. But if you want to use it for all headphones, go for the JDSLabs assembled O2. Don't drink the Head-fi amps kool-aid please. Head-fi is fine for headphones and in-ears, but don't touch their amps subforum with a stick.
