Q6600 to 1090t?

Thread Starter
I'll use bf3 as a reference point, is this upgrade worth going for? To be paired with a 6850 and then CF eventually probably, but I said that about my current card.

edit: it wouldn't cost much to do this, so ignore price as a factor. Second hand parts ftw.

Cheers

Q6600 is enough for 1 HD 6850. For two 6850s I'd go with an Ivy Bridge or Sandy Bridge setup, as my CPU struggles a lot in BF3 even without CF on. (CF stutters too much possibly due to memory leakage)

What you've described is probably a side-step in terms of FPS performance. You'd need a higher end efficient Intel CPU to make the difference.

I used to use a Q6600 like you. But then I took an arrow to the knee.

Actually it was a 6700 stock but you should be able to crossfire 2 6850s you would just need an overclock I would say around 4ish GHz

But if you're changing out boards and CPUs completely 1155 is the way to go since it will support ivy in the coming months and if you get the right boards, ivy will unlock you to PCIE 16 3.0

The 1090T isn't much better than the Q6600 core for core.

Opt for a 2500K instead if you can.

As a former 1090 T (and now 1100T) user. I can tell you for BF3 it runs good on a P2 x 6

HOWEVER. This guy is right.. if you can opt for a 2500k I'd go with that. CF a 6850 wont show a noticeable bottleneck on a p2 1090T (never did on mine) but if you ever want to upgrade and SLI or CF something in the GTX 570 (6970 AMD) or above you'll start hitting serious bottle neck.

Also The Ph2 is at its EOL thanks to AMD stopping its manufacture. 2500k is getting close but is superior in almost every way for gaming. For only 30 bucks more I'd make the move to sandy bridge.

Oh for shame it was not to the face. Bethesda make me angry, I hate all things skyrim by default. Nothing personal though smile.gif

Glad to hear it runs it nicely, I can't imagine me needing more than 6850CF in the foreseeable future so anything beyond that would prob be in a different platform.

It's more like £100 more, or the same price depening on what i5 kit I find second hand.

So it's a a good rig, but not better enough so I should jump straight to i5? Even if I can swing this upgrade for free?

Core for core, clock for clock, Core 2 is faster than Phenom II.

This is a side grade or a minor upgrade at best, go with Sandy Bridge.

I can cope with a minor upgrade for effectively free. Obviously I will run superpi 1m to compare to the intel quad, are there any other benchmarks anyone would be interested in seeing before I pass on the old rig? I will try 57x0 frankenfire on both motherboards, as well as the 6850. I'm not expecting much but the AMD clocks higher for a start.

I appreciate the responses, but there was no i5 option just now. I had to go for this as it might be faster, I get a shiny new toy, and I help a mate out with a quad. OK to close the thread now if a mod sees this, unless I turn it into a comparisson thread for anyone else that is upgrading out of date kit with other out of date kit biggrin.gif

edit: This comparisson to SB pleases me :

I went for it, BC2 seems to spread the load across the cores so they don't max out like they did previously, both CPUs at 3.6
It probably worth it for the motherboard alone, this thing looks like it could stop a bullet and weights twice what my previous x36/P45 asus boards did. Idle power consumption is down, cpu temp is down, load power is up.

Superpi1M is 4 seconds slower for the record.
