E8400 @ 3.8ghz or Q6600 @ ??

Hi,

I know this has most likely been covered before.. but I currently have a E8400 @ 3.8Ghz and it seems to be struggling with most newer games, as you can probably see in my rig I am running two Palit GTX 260's.

http://www.overclock.net/lists/display/view/id/3981429

Would changing my CPU for a Q6600 and trying to over clock it to say 3.2/3.4Ghz perform better on recent games such as Battlefield 3 or C.A.R.S..

This is going off the topic but when playing Bad Company 2 or Skyrim my SLI usage is around 50% each, I know it could just be the game but could this be my CPU bottlenecking the GPU's?

I can straight swap it for a Q6600 as I don't really want to spend £300 on an i5 bundle..

Thanks for any replies, if more information is needed let me know redface.gif

yes for BF3. but afaik, skyrim is optimized for dual cores. so you're still good. and i don't think you're being bottlenecked by that much.

Im in the same boat.

Honestly I cant see the cost benefit in the majority of cases favouring the upgrade.
Unless you can do it really cheap I wouldnt bother.

A modern quad core is the future but this ship hasnt sunk yet.

Thanks the the reply,

So the Q6600 overclocked 'should' be faster in BF3, I've seen benchmarks of BF3 and they used an i7 and dropped it down to two cores and it was just as fast as four cores?

Yeah I don't see the point in upgrading fully now anyway, but I can swap my E8400 for a Q6600 for free.

Still not sure whether it is worth it?

Anyone got any information with E8400 + Q6600 in recent games?

If you can straight swap maybe do so as a trial for a week?

Newer games that are heavy on the cpu are not gonna run that well on your sli. 775 was never that good at sli anyway and this is probably why you get 50% in those newer games. Disabling sli might help or going for a faster single card would be most ideal. Also a q6600 at 3.6ghz shouldn't bottleneck a single card really or only slightly cpu dependent games but thats common sense as you will always get better performance with a better cpu on those games.

I actually have a XFX 750i board sitting in my closet not being used, replaced it with a evga 780i board I got for free. The 780i board overclocked better and sli performance also was better but 790i on 775 still takes the crown for sli performance on 775. While the 780i board can overclock better, its still a ****ty overclocking board compared to any board with an intel chipset. Both boards also have pretty bad v-droop, while a pencil mod fixed helped a lot on the evga board, the xfx 750i board might not be so easy though its been along time.

you can get a q6600 on ebay for 100 bucks, and even a oc to 3.2-3.4 what should be possible on that board hopfully as the those nvidia boards do alot better with 1066fsb instead of 1333. Both the 750i and the 780i did not like overclocking my q9550 and would top out at 3.6ghz. My ep45 would top out at 4.25ghz btw.

I'll try disabling SLI, but before on my 8800GT's SLI they used to max out at 80-90% usage.

I could get my E8400 to 4.25Ghz but It crashed after a hour or two, I can't give it any more voltage but I can try updating the BIOS on the board as I haven't done that and I heard it helps OC.

What would be faster a E8400 @ 4.25Ghz or a Q6600 @ 3.4Ghz??

I guess I'll have to try for myself though

Thats because 8800gt's are weaker cards and don't need as much cpu power behind them. Quad Cores have all ways been better for sli, allowing the OS and Driver to use the extra cores to run on leaving the the rest of the cores for games. But 775 is also limited by its FSB and really you can only push so much data though it. But I would but most of the blame on the 750i chipset itself, really its a 650i chip with that damn nforce 200 chip what just a ghetto way to make pci-e 1.0 into 2.0.

I ran CF 4870's on my q9550 @ 4.25ghz and never had any bottlenecks, but had nothing but problems with dual 9600gt's with a e6700 @ 3.6ghz then of coarse my q9550 and my 2 gtx470's. 9600gt's works fine but still have problems on same games. I blame nvidia
