ASUS Sabertooth 990FX VCORE1 temp problem

Thread Starter
Hi,

I've got a temperature issue with a ASUS Sabertooth 990FX and a FX-8150 in VCORE1 (as Thermal Radar shows).

The problem is that when I overclock the FX-8150 (4.7Ghz with 1.45v in the CPU and LLC in Very High), my Corsair H100 can maintain good temperatures (55-62ºC) in the cores of the processor with prime95 or a very high CPU Load benchmark.

After a few minutes (not more than 5 min), the ASUS Thermal radar says that my VCORE1 have reach 80-85ºC.

My case is a Corsair 700D with all the fans enabled, but I'm not sure if since H100 don't create an airflow in the VCORE1 it isn't cooled correctly, or if there is a problem with it's heatsink.

85ºC for the VCORE1 zone is very high? Do you think that maybe there is a problem with the heatsink? Any advise?

Thanks for all and sorry for my English if it isn't very well.

(VCore 1 is the point which is at the TOP of the CPU point, I think that are de VRMs)

My Sabertooth 990 FX had pretty much the same problem. Never that hot though. Only way I could factor it was with fans cable tied over the NB. Mine used to get up around 60c according to asus AI suite .

I haven't test it, but this sensors are for a specified ASUS program, aren't standard and it's possible that Real Temp doesn't show it.

With the Crosshair V Formula you don't have the problem?

Thanks

CHV runs a lot cooler @ stock speed "In my opinion" I havent clocked it past 4.6 but was still cooler than my sabertooth.

Theres a wealth of knowledge here to buddy - http://www.overclock.net/t/1035333/official-asus-sabertooth-990fx-owners-club

These guys should be able to help you out. Props to one of my X clubs applaud.gif

i just got my 8120 to 4.1Ghz at 1.28v. LLC is on HIGH cuz the vcore just dropped all over so i need the LLC. made it about 5 passes in LinX. I noticed i kinda have that problem with VCORE1 and 2. But i of course already thought of something. since i had to take my 230mm fan out to mount my H-100, im going to mount that in the drive bays to have air atleast pulled acrossed it some. i mean i only have another 3 fan slots lol. i might even throw one on the bottom since the whole concept of heat rising... even though its getting blown out the back so it doesnt really apply to exhaust but it will pull colder air in.

I just got my board and ive been looking for an answer since last night. whats the safest temp for VCORE1 and 2? the rest of the board is 30C-40C and the socket is 54C with VCORE1 at 69C and VCORE2 at 67C? i dont wanna just blow my mobo so could someone tell me? this is my first amd build in over 10 years so yeah im not up to speed on AMD...
Hello,
just want to add my values, settings, conclusions and solutions about heat on this mobo
for others as information and for comparison

First: I have the sabertooth990fx with an fx-8150 @ 4,67Ghz @ 1,45v
System is fully air cooled only, so i've some more airflow around and not such high temps
on the vcore like the H100 guy above.
My temps on "normal use"-load (Video-Encoding / Gaming) are V-Core1 ~57°C and V-Core2 ~48°C
while CPU on ~52°C
I want to say clear this is no Full Load like prime95 or occt...

From my experience the V-Core1 Temp has an direct influence on the CPU-Temp,
so i decided to put some more cooling directly to this part of the mobo

my solution was to attach 3 small fans tied together in a row on the cooling block,
you can see it here:

qji34241.jpg

this brought me some degrees and it should help guys with an cpu watercooling solution
even more, because they normaly have less airflow, espacially in this area.

Because of tiny space available under my cpu-cooler I used Sharkoon 40x40x10 fans, but i will replace
them, because they have to low air flow (pumps 7,5 m³/h air on max speed,
today i've ordered 3 new ones for the vcore-1 block with same dimensions but 22 m³/h airflow)

Watercooled guys should have more room in that area and could for sure use even larger fans,
there are some really strong fans out there in 40x40x20 or better 50x50x20
I suggest buy really strong ones (>20 m³/h airflow) which even may be loud, but the more power they have on full load,
the more power they will have when you run them in a silent mode...

When you have the opportunity to cool the backside too (e.g. when you have a cutout around the cpu socket in your motherboard tray)
i would also suggest to put a small fan on the backside of the board,
u usally want to mount it to the right wall of your tower after making a appropriate cutout and let it blow in...

This should also lower your temps on vcore and all that lowering will have direct influence on cpu-temp, which will lower, too

For anyone who wants to have a closer look on my fan arangement, some pics
and a more detailed description is available on my profile here:
http://www.sysprofile.de/id169559

I will stick to that system for a while now "as is", 'cause i think i have reached the best possible with air-cooling.
Next system will definatly be a complete watercooled one, cpu-mobo-ram-gpus...

I ziptie 2 60 mm fans on my VRM cooler and never got over 60c under a load. I had a 8150 @ 4.8ghz with 1.488v.

If you ever have to RMA a Sabertooth. Good luck on get 1 back that runs right. I have RMA my Sabertooth 4 times and still my PCI-E slot 1 is only running at x8 not x16. The video card works fine in 3 different setup and PCI-E slot 3 on my sabertooth mobo. 1,2, and 4 was for this reason and number 3 was for Asus RMA people putting thermal paste in the socket.

Hi, i just bought one of this Sabertooth and it freezes when the VCore1 reach 50º(only happens when i'm in-game), it's also, sometimes, freezing for 30s or so, when i'm navigating on my browser. I ran memtest86+ for 8 hours, which was 2 complete passes.

No overclocking on CPU, RAM running at 1600mhz, but used to run it at that speed on my old Crosshair IV and 1100T BE. BIOS updated.

Anyone know of something that could cause it?
