Anyway around bandwidth limit?

The internet works on a 5GB rolling 24 hour limit. The data is counted by your MAC address (I believe). You register this address at the start of the year. You use this MAC address for everything so all data using electronics count against your limit, like an Xbox, etc.

Now, I won't be downloading any 30GB torrents, but I don't want to go over the limit because I had to upload a video, or from watching too much Netflix. With Netflix in HD, I'll go over in like 3 hours. Battlefield 3 just updated with a patch that was 3.7GB and I regularly upload Youtube videos over a GB in size.

This won't be a regular thing, but going over the limit means having your internet shut off for a day. Which will be a pain if I have something due.

That sounds like a really stupid college. What happens when you reach your 5gb limit? Do they give you a fine or cut your internet off?

I've never heard of a plan like that, although I can see why they implement it.

How do they provide you with internet? If it's wireless then I guess it would have to be MAC address based, which even still has its negatives, can't go in to those here though. Or do they have a wireless router for your dorm room and give you a password for it, then they monitor the usage of that router.

On the MAC address thing though, maybe you have to register your device and they white-list it?

the post two above yours specifies the internet gets shut off for a 24 hour period...
*pulls up calculator*

5GB x 7 days/week = 35GB/week
~4 weeks in a month = ~140GB of data/month.

wth.gif unless you're buying a new game from Steam every day, while streaming Netflix movies every day, while streaming Pandora every day, while having 1080p Youtube videos running in the background, how in the world do you reach the 140GB/month cap let alone go over it??
