1090T overclock and memory problems.

Thread Starter
Hi there,

i overclocked my pc to 4.2Ghz a while ago with my old ram (2x2GB GEiL black dragon 1333). It was running prime stable (tested for 14 hours).
Now i replaced that memory with the corsair vengeance 16GB kit. (High profile - 1600). I placed a ram cooler on top of it to keep it down.
My first set failed, and I RMA'd it as it wasnt stable at all. Now I've got this new set as replacement and things looked going well, but when i threw prime on it it failed.

The thing now is, i'm sure that my cpu is stable, as im using the same cpu settings as before. Im running on 220x19 @1.471875V @61*C prime. But how do i make this thing stable again? I've tried redoing the whole oc for a few times already but it doesnt want to go stable again.
Is this faulty ram again, or is it just asking for a bit of tweaking?
I haven't touched the HT or the CPU/NB at all. And im running the mem between the 1333 and 1600. I have already been looking at changing my CPU/NB speeds. When i set that on the recommended speed (2600) it seemed to be running smooth, but after some prime it BSOD me and i had to do the jumper thing again. (Dont have bios reset :/)

(re-sized and cut)

Any ideas? biggrin.gif

First, going from 2 x 2GBs up to 4 x 4GBs is reason enough for the previous OC to need attention. Using all four slots will put a much greater load on the IMC which is one item to address. You'll need more CPU/NB voltage to stabilize IMC. You may find a slight increase above stock Dram Voltage would help also. You should also beware that OC performance is at it's optimum with a total of 4GBs. Using more requires more work and different settings.

Second using the ref clock at 220 increases the memory freq etc, you stated your running 1333 and 1600MHz?

If it were me I stabilize the ram with everything else set at stock, than at least you'd have a starting point with stabilized 16GBs. I think you'll find it will take a little more doing than just try to duplicate what you had before when running 2 x 2Gbs especially at 4.2GHz.

I just noticed, 61C under load? Max for cores is 62C and I always advise staying much closer to 55C for some headroom. This is yet another reason you may not be stable.

I was running 220 x 19.5 at that time. And that 61*C was under prime load after about 2-3 hours in my room which was about 25-26*C at that time. The room im in right now is about 20-22*C which is noticable aswell with cooling. I do still like to refer to that 61 though since i'll move it back to my room in a few weeks.
Elso, i've been gaming a bit this morning (Before i had to go to work :/) with core temp on my keyboard display. when the bsod happened during the game session (The bsod was suprisingly fast this time -.-") my cpu was running on 37*C on core temp which is 47*C in real. Doesnt sound like a problem to me

I'll try running it again with the CPU/NB tomorrow at 2657 (From that diagram I mentioned earlier) and then i'll increase the voltage a big aswell on the mem as on the CPU/NB.

The mem is running on stock atm since it is stated to run on 1600Mhz by corsair and i thought it wouldn't need anything different to it redface.gif
Do you happen to know what the max voltage for the 89GX chipset is? I've been looking trough AIDA64 aswell, and i cant find any temp sensors of the NB chip. i could throw a heat sensor in the cooler though

thanks for the help btw!

I primed my pc now for about 15 hours on stock. But whenI tried to put my mem op 1600 it wouldn't boot my pc and got stuck at the loading screen of windows. Then it shut down and told me my windows was corrupt. So I threw it back to 1333 and it booted straight away.

Mem broken or?..
Any fixes?

Put everything to stock and set ram timings, voltage and speed yourself to advertised settings and test it with memtest ( www.memtest.org ) Try to get them work on their advertised speeds, add a bit more ram voltage, a bit more cpu-nb voltage.

You can also test them 1 by 1 to see if you have only 1 bad ram or 2.

did you adjust the dram voltage at all? 1.63 -1.65v 16GB is a lot of ram for 1.5v (assuming it is still is).

i recommend you use your old setting except ram set to 1600 and dram voltage to 1.65v.

Adjust your ref clock.  At 220Mhz ref clock there is no RAM multiplier to enable efficient DDR3-1600 operation.  240Mhz and 200Mhz ref clocks there is.

At first, sorry for me not responding on this thread, been bust with work/school and my driving lessons (<< Yay biggrin.gif)

But ye, I'll try doing the cpu/nb voltage first. If i still run into instability i'll test them one by one =]
But i am also kinda confused. What you guys are saying makes complete sence, but this corsair kit was specced at 1.55 volt on the box and corsair website. Does that mean that they're wrong or might it just be the ram in cooperation with my other components?

i will post an update tomorrow for the 1.65 voltage playing, and some cpu/nb voltage tune

Also, what is the max. voltage for my cpu/nb? im running the 89GX chipset and tried looking for the maximum temp on it, and cant find any frown.gif
post #10 of 11
Manufacture specs are rated for Intel platform, AMD platform usually requires a slight boost (maybe as much as .05 to .1v) to keep them happy. Plus if you're OCing this may have added needs for additional dram voltage.

Max CPU/NB voltage for a Thuban is same as Vcore 1.5 to 1.55v, but I rarely see that much used.

What temp are you looking for? If it's the NB temp, Asus recommends staying no higher than 60c on a CHIV if that gives you an idea. Have you thought about adding an additional cooling fan to blow directly onto the NB HS, dram and VRMs? If possible adding one behind the mobo will make a nice difference too.
