How to prevent algae?

Thread Starter
When I built my loop I read about algae and prevention, but forgot to order any. This thread will be packed with questions, but all related to algae.

1 had the loop going for about 5 days now with just distilled, black primo tubing. The res. is clear and not in contact with intense light. Is it terrible not to put pt nuke or whatever in almost immediately?

2. Is algae growth pretty much inevitable and that's why cleaning of the loop is required at 6 months?

3. How hard is algae to clean from radiators and blocks? I feel like an algae taken rad. would be a real pain.

4. PT nuke looks like the solid option for distilled users. What is the difference between copper sulfate pt nuke and benzalkonium chloride nuke? Why are there 2 versions?

Thanks

A kill coil simply didn't do it for me. I had clear tubes and they were green by the end of one month. Copper sulfate seems to be working well for me, no problems and I'm at the 4 month mark. (I add a few drops more each month).

I'm using a kill coil with deionized water and I'm coming up on 2 years without draining/cleaning my loop.

1. Yes, algae spores only need a little light and nutrients to germinate. The sooner the better.
2. No, it is not inevitable. My loop has been going since May '10 with no algae build-up whatsoever and I only use 3 grams of silver. Only time I needed to drain my loop is when I moved or changed blocks, not for any build-up.
3. Hydrogen peroxide will get rid of it and it degrades into water and oxygen.
4. Some people just don't like sulfates in their water. tongue.gif JK. According to their site they state that the benzalkonium chloride is better suited to loops using corrosion inhibitor since it buffers the pH. Sulfates are generally acidic; which would negate the effects of the corrosion inhibitor.

For starters, before the loop is ready to rock-n-roll full time, do a 100% sitting fill of white-distilled-vinegar over night in the loop. This would work in parellel if you need to do a leak test too. This should take care of the nasties in and around the loop. Then flush out the loop with distilled water. When done, drain and fill with your preference of coolant mixture.

There are threads often started here about people getting those nasty algae problems even with a kill coil and the coolant mixed just right. The real question is, did they purge the loop first? If not, then the small amount of kill coil or small silver strands or small dosage of colloidal silver will not really keep the nasties away. Always flush first for the best results.

Wouldn't a 10% bleach: distilled water solution work? I can't think of a part that would degrade because of a slightly basic solution.

Edit: Sodium Hypochlorite is an oxidizer though...

Not to thread jack, but is it safe to run with a kill coil and copper sulfate? I know someone is going to say it is unecessary, but a single kill coil didnt work for me last time. Maybe I should try two coils? I did rinse with vinegar/distilled before hand. I always make a habit of doing that. Cleans the copper parts quite well too I might add.
