Software Raid or Raid Controler

Thread Starter
I am going to raid two Hdds and I was wondering if I am tight on budget would it give me extremely slow down speeds if I use software Raid instead of using a dedicated raid card. I don't care if it gives strain on the CPU because I will have high speeds Cpu speeds. If it is a BIG difference I will go with a raid card. But I would have to delay the raid if I use the raid card. Thanks in advance for the help!

Are these hard drives in a server, where they're only going to be used as Storage?

Then use softraid. If you're using Linux, use ZFS.

No, I want to use raid 0 for performance and even the raid 0 controllers are at least $100.

What chipset are you using? Most recent modern integrated controllers are quite good, notably the X58, Z68, and P67 chipsets.

I most likely will be using x58 but I don't know about if Ivy Bridge will have because shortly after it releases I will get it. So, I would not Raid now probably when Ivy Bridge comes out. So, your saying if Ivy Bridge chipsets support RAID use it? I was told that onboard raid is slower than a raid card.
