With my setup what OC could i expect to get.

the computer is listed in the sig
tomorrow my H100 will be here at the house and i can go from air to liquid. so thats the only part not listed.
i will be using it as push/pull.

honestly i know nothing about overclocking.
the only cpu i have overclocked was a c2d 4300 using a circuit writer on the cpu for my sons computer.
that was a no brainier. adjusting voltages and other things, i would have no idea about.
need a simple crash course in over clocking so if theres a thread about that, please link me.

a)you have a high-tdp cpu
b) you have a..3 or 4 phase power motherboard
c) you have unsinked vrms

It's not a good idea to overclock with that motherboard
not at all
disable 2 cores and undervolt/slightly overclock it
3.6-3.8 MAX
here's a guide http://www.overclock.net/t/777378/official-gappos-little-deneb-thuban-overclocking-guide-with-too-many-smileys/0_20
read it ..learn it..it has all the overclocking steps in the correct order

A870U3 3+1 No 125W 3 transistors - NIKOS MOSFETs 4-pin ATX

very bad mobo to overclock on..disable 3 cores if you do

is it just because of the mobo that i would need to disable two cores or is that a standard practice?
any advice on a mb that wouldnt break the bank but be great for over clocking using all the items i currently have?

Not really any that could be considered safe (yes, here comes the arm-waving tongue.gif)

This A-Series motherboard was not built with overclocking in mind and considering the low end VRM design is probably no more ready to run this processor with an OC than a weak 300W PSU is ready to handle a high end video card.  Look for a board swap in the coming days!  One of the decent choices for price right now is the ASUS M5A97 at $95 shipped although there are other options if you don't want to spend this much. You can read more about this issue in the"About VRMs & MOSFETs" link, see my signature.  Disabling cores will reduce power load onto mobo components which may enable a btter OC.

Keep the stock cooler on and leave out the H100 until your motherboard is swapped out as leaving a low~ish capacity 3+1 phase on a 125W processor with no cooling whatsoever is very unwise.  Many VRM-related failure incidents were heatstroke deaths.  With heat, amperage supply ability reduces.

thanks guys
i subbed to your link xd, read about half and i'll finish the rest after a good power nap.

a friend helped me build my system, for the most part i knew what i wanted but the mobo i had no clue about.. should have found a site like this to get a better one right from the start.

this part has me a tad confused though

it wouldn't be good to install the h100 even if im not over clocking?
i wanted to get a better cooler because when im folding, the cpu jumps to a max of 58c, wanted to bring that down into the 40c or lower range.
im guessing that the cpu fan somehow cools those phases?

ok found a pic of my mb.
this is the area you are talking about that SHOULD have cooling (outlined in red)?

could i add cooling to these parts and that would permit me to OC?
something like this
i'll get another mb when money isnt as tight.

there are only 4 phases for OC... Get another motherboad w/ 8phases
post #9 of 10

There's nothing preventing you from OCing in particular (i.e. BIOS features), the problem is that it may not be able to be done safely nor reliably on this motherboard.

The problem with the A870U3 is that the MOSFETs along with MOSFET count (only 3 phases must share power provision to the CPU which means limited transistor count, very limited overall capacity, lower efficiency, and much more heat) may not be able to deliver the adequate capacity reliably for an overclocked high TDP processor.  The MOSFETs used if I'm not mistaken are only rated to provide the full current if at 25C and with this kind of power load they will be pushed well beyond 25C, reducing capacity.  The driver chip (that drives & complements the high-side and low-side MOSFET chips that filter/convert the voltage) is a "third transistor; this is typically done to reduce board costs but also typically less reliable (nearly all the failure prone boards I have seen skimp by using some sort of third MOSFET transistor over proper driver chip(s)).

In more serious cases a lack of capacity and overheating/over-current can cause, sometimes at random, a VRM failure which may involve a board shut down, fire and smoke, and damage of other components.  The A870U3 has not been observed as a failure prone board (i.e. capacity is so drastically low that most any attempt to run high TDP processors esp. with overclock is at high risk) but that doesn't mean it can be reliable for this task as if any over-current protection methods are present (none have been confirmed yet), loss of performance or saved work may be caused due to these protective methods.  You should be looking for a motherboard that at the very least provides a quality 4+1 phase VRM system that has cooling installed. Those setups have not been seen to have any problems pushing higher TDP processors.

i'll grab another mb when i have the cash.
semi-annoyed that i bought this. for another 30 i could have a good mb.
i like the looks of that asus,. i want to go blue, white, and black with my computer.
also do the wire sleeve look.. good god it would look awesome.

i got that h100 this morning and installed it.
before i shut down the pc, my cpu was idle at 43c and under 100% load (folding) im at 30c
i have it in push pull using their 120mm fans pushing and 140mm fans pulling on the top of my cm690 ii

so at least that's something to rejoice about.

when i get a new mb, say the asus above, what oc numbers could i expect?
