Cooler for ASUS Maximus IV Gene-Z/GEN3? - Page 3

Just to close the loop, I think that I have narrowed it down to either:

- Coolermaster Hyper 212+ Evo with an extra fan, or
- Thermalright True Spirit 120

I know that everyone loves the Noctua D14, but that beast is way too close to the GPU IMHO, and the smaller Noctuas just don't grab me. The reviews for the True Spirit look fantastic, but it is also about 1 or 2mm taller than the 212 Evo, and that cooler already compresses the foam on a Define Mini. Thus, I may actually switch back to my original plan and get an Arc Mini instead with the True Spirit. The case widths and internal layouts are the same, but the Mini doesn't have a double layer of acoustic foam on the wall over the CPU...so that gives me 5 more mm of headroom.

Thanks again!

I've got the Phanteks air cooler. It is about as large as the Noctua D14, but it has some cool colors. Don't be worried about the closeness to the GPU. I had slight contact on the GPU with one of the fan clips (apparently the same can/does happen with the D14), but a just added some electrical tape for padding.

Out of boredom I moved the GPU to the other PCI slot to see if it changed the temps, and it didn't. If big fits, go for it. The cooling is worth it. The fans on mine run at 1200 RPM, and on my 2500k @ 4.8GHz, I don't see temps above 66*C. I'm sure the Noctua is just as good (I just didn't like the colors).

Just go with some good low profile ram, and you should be fine.

Side note: I'm no expert, just one man's opinion.

As Chris already said, the heatsinks closeness to gpu isn't anything to be concerned of. Not everyone likes a big heatsink though and both the Hyper 212 and True spirit are good coolers. I just think that you should go with the case you want and not change it because of the heatsink. Not trying to sell anything here, but the hyper 212 is 1mm higher than the matterhorn... just saying tongue.gif

Thanks guys. I REALLY appreciate all of the advice. Lots to learn here. My last four builds were Shuttle cubes (i.e., REAL small form factor smile.gif )...and they came with MB and ICE pipe cooler systems...so this is all new to me.

Just don't get Corsair Vengeance Ram and you can choose whatever heatsink you think is best.
