Overclocking my 551 cpu on asrock 775v88+ mobo

Hi everyone, ive pretty much been floating around these overclocking forums getting as much info as i can on overclocking for a good few years now and i havent even come close to touching the tip of the iceburg there is just so much to take into consideration, since i dont have money spare and would like to get the most out of my machine without frying any components and i kno this computer can do a lot more than all the factory settings so i would like ur joint advice on what u think my machine is capable off the specs are as follows -:

CPU 551 64bit

MOBO asrock 775v88+

RAM 2xPC3200 2xPC2700 althought cheap ram the pc3200 is samsung and the 2 pc2700 block are 2 different types 1 is double data rate and the other is single data rate so i lose my dual channel mode, im thinking about investing in more better ram for dual channel mode

HD maxtor 80-gb 7k rpm

GFX card X1600 pro 512mb AGP radeon

Water Cooling consists off radiator with 2 fans cpu block with pump and a resevoir, im also thinking of investing in a GPU water cooling block and adding another radiator.

one thing i am not sure off is the temperature sensor on the mobo it says im running idle at 42 degrees but b4 i had the water cooling i had the factory fan n heat sink and it was sitting a little cooler than that so i think i may have got heatpaste on it but im not sure as i dont know where the heat sensor is thus effecting any results in overclocking.

So with everything at factory settings and with that equipment what could u guys advise me on to better my system as i kno it has great potential

I'm still pretty new to the overclocking but I do have a few things I can suggest. The first thing I would say is remove the 2 PC2700 rams you got. Its downclocking your PC3200.

Disable spread spectrum (should be under chipset configuration)
Set MPS revision to 1.4
Set DRAM freq to DDR 400

From there start increasing your FSB freq by 5mhz and see how far you can go before it won't boot up anymore (keep an eye on temps too).

no offense my man but thats one thing im trying to establish is a true temperature reading so i can o/c effectively as i kno for a fact its wrong, beacause when i was on air cooled i was idling at around 32-34 then i got some better heatsink paste cant remember which type i think it was ice ? one of the expensive ones anyway as i was taking off the heatsink one of the plastic pins broke on the heatsink which forced me to pay for a water cooled system (i was going to get one anyway) which i am now getting 42-44 degrees idle whether i have enough paste on it or not i do not know or whether i got paste on my temp sensor (which is my most favoured fault atm as i cant think of anything else that can be effecting it but i do not know where the sensor is to clean it) as i stated in my first post, but as for the ram the mobo only takes a maximum of 2xPC2700 and 2xPC3200 not 4xPC3200 but can have 4xPC2700 should i ignore the manual and go for a complete set off PC3200 ? i do really like having 2gb of ram as it plays games with ease especially the games i like, like bf2 and soon to be bf2142

In regards about your temperature readings, you may get better responses if you post about it in the Intel Coolng or the Water Cooling forum. I'm not too familiar with water cooling but there are plenty of people on here that can help you with that.

If you like having 2gb, then stick with how your current setup is. Essentially, you will have 4 pc2700 DDR333 which will runs effectively at 166mhz. You might be able to squeeze more juice out of it but will must likely need to set a divider. Hope you can get your cooling back to the way it was.

cool cheers for ur advice ill keep all of that in mind although i have managed to lock the ram at ddr400 with those ram sticks on plus ive managed to lock it in dual channel mode which technically reads at 1.5gb (i had this setup for a few weeks no problems) the PC2700 was pulled out of an old system and even tho i havent got them settings forced atm i was hoping that if any of the ram was to go it would essentially be the pc2700 first ? plus im not sure having them settings forced will burn out any other component also if i forced it on ddr400 in dual channel mode the sticks get warm and not hot im not sure how it will fest out if overclocked (if i had the money or spare parts i would push this thing to about 4.0).
The other thing that is confusing me is it essential to o/c it in 5mhz increments ? because when i played around with it when i first put together my comp i had the FSB at 210 x 17 (and tried 205x17) no problems but at 203 x 17 i was getting all sorts of windows errors mainly the blue screen and install errors this has intrueged me for some time, thanx in advance and sorry my posts seem to be getting longer and longer lol

What kinda water cooling are you using?? How much paste did you put on the CPU IHS?? you only need a little dab right in the center of the chip as thats where the core is located. Now unless you realy want to get the most from your system with a serious draw back, Id suggest getting At Least another set of PC3200's or just buy a 2x1 gig kit, the reason for this is, you are already killing your PC's performance by running slower ram then the CPU's FSB. With an intel you need to run at least a 1-1 Ram/FSB ratio this will give you a big improvement over you current configuration, and is the ideal ratio when it comes to Intels. Also from what Ive heard that board will not sustain much of an overclock being a Value based board that allows the use of old tech with new tech which is usualy not a good idea for above said reasons. My addvice at this time would be to remove the water block, clean all the paste off and around the block and the CPU and start over there with a small little dab thermal paste, then Id recommend you buy some new ram either another kit of PC3200 or a 2x1gig kit of at least PC3200, if your board supports DDR2 then why not try some DDR2 533 or 667 this will yeild much better results over your current chips and PC performance.

BTW the DDR standard on your board is PC3200(DDR400), and the DDR2 standard is PC2-5300(DDR2 667).

ahh now what adeoliver said has made complete sense and backed up my own theory on why it was a little sluggish for what it was, i was contemplating selling the ram i have in exchange of 2x1gb blocks as u said the mobo is a value board and doesnt o/c too well (214mhz max on a good board!!) the cooling kit i got was an all in one (modified by myself to add maybe a radiator and resevoir) dynatron, the reason i kno the temp sensor isnt showing correct degrees is that when it is saying its running hot the block on cpu and the pipes are still cool, also judging by what u have said i think i may have a little too much paste on it, so i agree with ur theory ill grab some more paste on monday. it will take me a while to get the money needed tp upgrade a little more but at least u have given me a deffinate goal to head towards as i was going to build a secondary comp and with the upgrades needed to get the most out of my pc will enable me to do just that so thanks for all ur help guys much appreciated

just thought i would add that adeoliver was right (but he probly knew that already ), although days after my last post my pump had gone on the wc luckily was still under warranty which enabled me to play about a bit inside and with the right amount of paste on cpu (i kno the prescotts run hot anyway but with the D0 stepping ive got high hopes for this cpu) the temps dropped by about 6 degrees idle and 10 degrees under load even with the case on the temps only vary by about 2 degrees where as it made about a 5-8 degree difference before i didnt realise that a tiny amount of paste can make that much difference (all to experience) my next will be a reasonably priced new mobo with o/c potential (if anyones got any suggestions ?) then ofc more ram, i have stuck with samsung pretty much but may upgrade to the likes of kingston or ocz (i hear good rumours about them brands) ill say again cheers for ur advice guys
