[Build Log] Budget Low-power 2700k file/media storage server (formerly for Folding).

I know you're thinking that "budget" and "2700k" dont compute, but it does when you get a 2700k from IREP for $130

Ive actually been debating this for quite a while. I originally bought the 2700k from irep so i could possibly sell it closer to retail for some extra $$$ (and yes thats against IREP tos, but Ebay was flooded with lower-than-retail 2700k's right after the IREP deal went live)

But i like to fold and the better efficiency of SB got me thinking i could maybe contribute more while using less power than my current i7 920. Plus i could use it for video transcoding.
Im going to be putting this system into an NZXT Alpha case that currently houses my OLD p4 system. I will for now be using the psu that is currently in that system (an mge 450w) with some adapters (its only a P4 capable psu, no 24/8pin). though since that is a very low end psu i may eventually upgrade it
Im going for lower power and budget here for sure. here is what im looking at:

Parts to get:
ASROCK Extreme3 Gen3 Z68 mobo $122 @ newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157271
G.Skill Sniper 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600 low voltage 1.25v ram $50 @ newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231461
NZXT Havik 140 Cpu Cooler $60 @ newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835146011
20-24pin psu adapter $4 @ newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812119023
4-8pin psu adapter $4 @newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812119267

Total cost (adding processor) : ~ $380 (which is about the price for a new 2700k itself tongue.gif )

Without a dedicated graphics card the 450w psu should handle these components just fine. One of the cheap main capacitors in the psu was replace with a high end Rubycon cap after it failed (a <$10 fix instead of buying a new psu) details on that can be found here: http://www.overclock.net/t/969989/power-supply-repair/0_30

I will probably pull the trigger once i get my tax refund (which probably wont happen for another 5 days) so I'm open to any ideas or concerns if you've got em.

UPDATE 2/5/2012. Parts bought and on the way

UPDATE 2/9/2012. The rig is put together (sans ram. got some from my main rig standing in) getting it set up. here are some pics for you:

I wouldn't risk it with an old psu.
Especially when you could get a CX430 like this for 25$, shipped at no cost.

I most likely wont be sticking with that psu for long. ill be on the lookout for a nice high-efficiency one later on i think.

The CX430 is a rock-solid PSU, you can't go wrong with it. thumb.gif

Hopefully it'll turn out OK, judging by your other build, I'm sure it'll be pretty!

probably not actually. in order for it to look pretty i would have to have the inside painted and get a new psu/sleeved extentions, and seeing as this is a budget build im not going to be doing any of that quite yet.
Well, it's not low cost with my configuration, but, I'd like to see a $/PPD on my rig when I get it up to speed ... one of the GTS 450sc's needs to be RMA'd. It has the same CPU and motherboard as your build. Didn't get the chip for anywhere near your price, but, found a fairly reasonable deal for a BNIB from a F/S thread in another forum ... and, both of the 450s cost me under $100 total since one was a folding competition drawing gift.

After you solve your PSU issue, you might consider adding the 450s in SLI and get close to a 20k PPD boost ...

I might be able to do something like that once i move out, but if i was to do that my dad would have a fit when he saw the power bill for the month after that.
Half the reason im doing this is because my 920 would more than double our power bill if i made it fold 24/7 @ 4GHz

So my tax refund just came in, anyone else want to chime in here before i buy this stuff?
I still think an H60 would fair better than air cooling, but whatever.
