Will someone explain the 'infatuation' people have with folding? Am I missing something?

Same here, it seems to be a waste of my computer's power when I can be using it myself. Just add's heat to the room, wastes power, and no benefit to me. I could use a old PC for a server or render machine rather than a PPD box...

Folding isnt the only thing i plan to use this thing for. Quick Sync will allow me to use it for quick video processing also.
also im fairly certain that this rig is using less power while its folding than my main rig uses while its idling......
its producing almost NO heat to be honest.

You don't fold for yourself, you fold for others.

Especially when you could get a CX430 like this for 25$, shipped at no cost.

Yer agreed you would not want to risk the parts with such a dodgy power supply. Nice build BTW. Should perform well in folding. smile.gif

So after trying to bump the proc up to 4.8 GHz the computer shut itself off without any error codes. im guessing the PSU just couldnt hold it up with that much power. its still chugging along just fine at 4.5 however.
CSM/Zodac have recruited me to be in the folding TC for Big Bang Theorists, so to resolve any possible PSU issues im getting a 700W OCZ StealthXtreme from another user here on ocn for $40.
when it arrives (and when i have time) the system will have to be down for a few hours so i can get that psu in there, which i think is going to need some holes drilled in the MB tray for cable management.

Glad that's working out for you, Alex. I wouldn't worry about losing a few hours of points, it'll be worth the loss later on.

Regarding your PSU, that MIGHT be the case, but it seems odd that 500w(?) couldn't take 4.8, but oh well.

well something ended up happening that i would never have expected. i had the rig finally perfectly stable running at 4.9GHz for 2 weeks straight. one morning it was off and didnt want to boot up. Got everything tested and the motherboard is being RMA'd.
The culprit: It would appear the 3.3v rail on the OCZ PSU i bought started acting up and went out of spec damaging the PCH on the mobo. (a psu tester shows the 3.3V rail going HH if i have just 3 harddrives plugged into the PSU by themselves)
The power supply was in perfect working order when i bought it but it was 2 years old and doesnt have any warranty left so im out another $40 and have to find another one frown.gif
Next time i will be sure to ask how old any use PSU is before i buy it rolleyes.gif

Edit: unless i can find out what is wrong with the PSU and fix it myself biggrin.gif
