A SSD for one game?

post #1 of 17
Thread Starter
So I am a huge gamer and I tend to play single player games one at at time. I am currently working though LA Noire.

I already have 3 WD HDD on my set up. One has my OS plus other software (office/firefox etc) the 2nd has media files and the last has steam/games.

I was wondering if it would be worth it to buy a SSD just to store my current game (LA Noire in this case) using SteamMover. For non-steam games I would just install the game onto that drive.

Would this be a good idea to reduce loading times and make the game "run faster" by rending things on the screen more quickly and so fourth.

SSD's DO NOT improve game performance. all it does is improve loading times. that's IT...

it won't render anything dfaster with a ssd.

an SSD for 1 game = waste.

games like Masseffect 2 are good for an ssd.. (trust me. loading times get epic for this game)

Personally. i store EVERYTHING on SSD's.. i have 3 of em lol..

Like nifatech2120 said, it won't render faster. It will certainly help loading times (which I hear are pretty bad on that game).

I agree with NifaTech. It will only decrease load times, not game performance, FPS or anything image wise.

SSD = OS + apps + a few games

Do not use a SSD for games only, that is a waste. rolleyes.gif

Textures load quicker and load times are better, that is what an SSD will do for games. That is it.
post #7 of 17
I'm going to disagree with the concusses here, and put in the not-so-brief logic over from the [h]ard[w]are forums.

SSDs do have an impact on some games. If it's a first person shooter, you generally only have a handful of textures and models, and the models are textured with decal swaps. Almost everything you need is put to ram at the round start. FPS are ~bad~ SSD choices.

Large worlds and MMOs are quite the opposite, they're trying to be friendly with older machines with less rams, or in the case of large world games, be console friendly. Games that constantly dump long unused textures and models, and try to predicatively load whats needed next, will always have little jarring microstutters. An SSD would help a game like skyrim, especially if you use texture packs. It'd also help in a game like world of warcraft, which has TONS and TONS of texture art assets that it swaps in and out of memory.

So in summary, large/seamless/mmo = Benefit in terms of smoothness and minimum FPS. Load times.
FPS = Just load times.

you have a good PC so a SSD is useless if you dont spend a lot and use it for a lot of games and your OS and it will only improve your loading time but you have a good PC so loading time isnt really a problem .

Thanks for the information all. I guess I will consider it if Guild Wars 2 comes out as SSDs decrease load times for MMOs (loading screens come often in MMOs).

Anyone got any good recommendations for SSDs? Around 60ish Gigs would work.
