Accelero XTREME Plus on 5870

Thread Starter
Hey, I have a bit of a complicated situation that I was hoping to get an opinion on.

My brother purchased a Accelero XTREME Plus for his 6950 because he was having heating issues. He installed it but the thing ended up overheating anyways and he sent the card back to XFX with its stock cooler. Now my 5870 is starting to act up(overheating, I BSOD'd twice this week and the fans are running at a particularly faster speed) so I'm thinking about taking his Accelero XTREME Plus that is just laying around because I don't think it was the cause of the problems with his card.

Now here is where it gets fuzzy for me, pardon my description of the problem, I have a terrible habit of tuning out when my brother explains stuff to me but I think I got the jist of what he said. He told me that the reason his card overheated despite installing the Accelero XTREME Plus was because the little RAM heatsinks that came with the package were shipped in from Hong Kong and the thermal adhesive on them were long overdue because they have a week long shelf life and the package was in transit for about 3 weeks or so. His suggestion to me was to not use the RAM heatsinks at all which I didn't quite understand how that would solve the problem but he said his 6950 didn't have them with the stock cooler and it probably wouldn't need them with the Accelero XTREME Plus.

So now my questions are...

1. Will I run into problems if I don't use the RAM heatsinks at all.

2. If I need to use them, do I have to use a special kind of thermal compound? Can I toss some Artic Silver on them and be good to go or should I hunt for the box that is somewhere around the house and get the thermal compound that came with it?

3. If I do find the thermal compound, is there any validity to the one week shelf life bit my brother was talking about in terms of whats in the tube?

4. My brother only used 7 of the supplied RAM heatsinks. He said the others were "extra," Is that correct? Did he maybe forget to put the rest of the RAM heatsinks on his card?

5. Should I just buy a new set of RAM heatsinks from Amazon? They are only $12 but I'd rather not have to spend it if I don't need to.

Thanks.

You will need this to use that cooler with your card. I had it in my HD 6950 and got 55C under load Unlocked to HD 6970 @ 950/1375.

Looks like if I order from there I'd be running into the same potential problem my brother had because they ship from Hong Kong. Is using some Arctic Silver out of the question?

You need something that sticks. Double sided thermal tape. Look for it in ebay.

I have this on my 5870. The ram sinks dont stick on very well most times once you keep on moving them.
I also use the Thermalright VRM-R3 for the Vram. There is also the VRM-04. Depends on the what CPU cooler your using, as this is not small.
The stock VRam that came with Accelero is ok, but as effective.

Most times I have the fan speeds set to 50%, and temp never go over 55c.
I have a 200mm fan blowing direct at thr GPU at 50% speed. (a balance of cooling and noise)

Now its sitting on lower 16x slot, due to the VRM cooler being blocked by the CPU heatsink. This is where the VRM-04 comes in, as the orientation is rotated 90°.
As for thermal paste AS5 is not very good to use. Better to use like MX-3/MX-4, as there is no curing requirements like the AS5 200hrs.

So you know, my 5870 is reference. So other 5870 versions, might not fit correctly due to the layout of the PCB components.

Hmm, looks like the problem I'm running into is the VR001 doesn't come with the thermal glue so I wont be able to attach the heatsinks at all. Anyone have any idea where I can find some or perhaps a good alternative? I would prefer not buying from the Arctic Cooling website if it means its going to ship all the way from Hong Kong. =/

EDIT: Is this what I should be getting?

Hmm, I seem to have ran into a problem. I installed the Accelero Xtreme Plus just fine using Sekisui 5760 but I cant seem to get past post. I get picture on my monitor for less than 1 second before my monitor reverts to stand-by. I'm not sure what is wrong and I'm not sure how to even debug this issue. I've tried reseating my card and the memory, I've tried using DVI instead of HDMI but nothing. The fans on the card seem to be spinning just fine but the image just cuts out after less than a second and I have no idea why. Powering off and on immediately yields the same results so I don't think its an overheating issue with the card and the debug codes on my motherboard are normal but when my monitor goes into stand by its blank. I'm not sure if that's normal but the codes it does run through are 92, 60, 98 A3 and according to the manual there is nothing wrong with those codes on boot but the debugger eventually goes blank which I'm not sure if its supposed to do. Also, I suppose its worth noting that the card is significantly cooler to the touch since installing the new fan. Before, the card would heat up incredibly fast even just sitting in the BIOS and after powering down I could feel it but with the new fan it doesn't seem to ever get as hot.

Crap. Things have gotten progressively worse. I tried taking out my video card to use onboard video because I needed to get some work done and I may as well confirm whether the video card was the source of the problem. Hit the power button and none of my case fans spun besides my CPU fan and the Dr. Debugger is blank and didn't run any codes back to me. I put the card back in to see if I could boot the same way I had before where it goes into standby but now my new fan no longer spins upon booting just like my case fans and I still don't get any codes in the debugger.
