Why is this so Difficult??

Hey Guys,
I'm a real noob when it comes to selecting mobos. I've honestly haven't felt this confused about anything. They all seem to be the same yet prices are pretty funny. I have three questions at the moment:

1) I am planning on getting the new Ivy Bridge Processor, and I hope to get the Z77 chipset mobo with it. But do you think both will be released at the same time? I mean, the P67 was released months after SB and I don't want to wait that long to finish my build.

2) Whenever it is released, do you think the Z77 will be significantly higher in price than the Z68 boards? Because currently I suppose you could pick out a decent Z68 board for less than $200. Will the Z77 be priced similarly?

3) If in fact it will be taking a long time to show up after the Ivy Bridge Processors are released, then I will probably just get a Z68 with PCIe 3.0 support. So keeping that in mind, could you tell me what is the difference between the following boards? I've pasted a link for the comparison below:

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Productcompare.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007626%2050001314%20600158412&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&CompareItemList=280%7C13-157-271%5E13-157-271-TS%2C13-128-498%5E13-128-498-TS%2C13-131-729%5E13-131-729-TS%2C13-128-506%5E13-128-506-TS

If you could please also let me know what to look for when distinguishing between the motherboards? Because they all seem about the same to me yet there prices range from $140 to $190.

Thanks in advance!

1. They should actually come out before, but I'm not positive. I know they've already shown off a bunch of them.
2. Should take the same price structure. They'll be a little higher at first due to being new, but nothing crazy I wouldn't think.
3. I haven't seen anything on the Z77 that offers a particular benefit compared to Z68. PCI-E 3.0 isn't really necessary, it gives about 1FPS more in games, if that. As for the boards, they're pretty much the same. I can't tell you anything more than the descriptions do. If you don't need a fullsize ATX board, you could check out the Gene-Z as well, its really nice and is at the $180-190 price range (USD).

Feel free to ask more questions! smile.gif

I would extremely recommend the ASrock Z68 Fatality Professional, I own one and its quite far the best motherboard I have ever seen thumb.gif

for the z67 vs z77 chipset question, the only thing I've heard that is new about the z77 chipset is native usb 3.0 support, but I'm sure there will be more additions that the z77 chipset will have to offer

I think that's about it, besides more PCI-E lanes maybe...

Hey guys, thanks for the excellent and fast replies:

1) Its going to be released even before? Oh that's great news! If this is the case then I'll look into those for sure. Might as well get the new chipset if I have the option.

2) I've actually looked at the Gene-Z - and I have a Micro ATX at the moment. But I don't know why I figured ATX was always better. Is this true? Is there a disadvantage to having a small mobo? I will be doing SLI so I will need extra space if I can get it.

3) I suppose it is just randomn marketing that causes the price differences.

4) @GeekGamer - i've looked into that mobo. Its about $200 in USA but in Canada the price jumps by over a $100. So Unless i am planning a trip to USA in the near future, I'm not spending over $300 especially if I know its not worth the price.

Thank you so much you guys, I kinda understand that now I should just gauge the quality of the mobo by the ports/sockets I need. Thanks!

1. More than likely or side-by-side. You can Google to see the ones they've announced so far.
2. They're pretty much the same, ATX just offers more expansion. If you don't have another card (i.e. sound card or network, etc), then the Gene-Z is perfect even with Crossfire/SLI.
3. Its all about the same really. I've never had an issue with Asus, but Gigabyte is one brand I'll never recommend.

I would wait for a tuned Z77 board if you plan on Ivy, as while the features of the Z77 chipset might be the same, you can count on manufacturers spicing up their lineups with newer tech. IMO unless you already own SB, i wouldn't buy a Z68 board and then wait to fill it with an Ivy Bridge CPU, either way the Z68 prices will drop significantly upon Z77 release.

BTW they will release boards before CPU, which is April 4 for CPU, it prob wont be delayed.

GB is one brand Z77 board which if i was smart id look out for. With Z68 they didn't do well, but they have their game together for Z77.

Once again, you guys are awesome in terms of fast and reliable responses:

As for the Gene-Z i'm really starting to like the product. But I had no idea at the time of posting the first post that Z77 boards might be out earlier. I guess its useless to try and plan out a specific board from right now because it will all change when Z77 is released.

And @Sin0822, I think that is a really good point. Even if I decide to go for a Z68 (Which I probably won't) then it still makes sense to wait till Z77 is released because prices will drop. At that point, I can probably go for the Gene-Z like Jesus recommends tongue.gif

Thanks guys, I will post more questions as they arise. As for now, you guys are awesome. REP+++
