Energy cost of a folding computer versus space heater

Hello, with machines becoming more energy effecient now a days I was just thinking about this and realized I didn't know the answer and when that happens I make a thread on OCN and get schooled wink.gifthumb.gif


So, I was just wondering, how much energy (broken down in terms of $$ per month is possible) does the average space heater use?


and About how much $$ per month does a pretty effecient newer folding rig put on the bill ( I know this can vary greatly depending on hardware, but say like the sweet spot of folding effectiveness and hardware power)

If the computer use 1000W it will put out 1000W of heat, no matter how much work it does.

Space heaters are almost always electric, right?, and so if they use 1000W they also would put out 1000W of heat, simple as that.

I dont know that just does not seem right. Wouldnt it make sense that the heat is caused by lost energy. Power supplies are ranked based on efficiency where 80% efficient means that only 20% is lost due to heat.

regardless a space heater will provide you better heat where you neeed it. If you dont mind spending a couple extra bucks and getting some heat then set up a folding heater.

Cost of the heater is determined by the number of wattts it uses and what you pay for power which can be huge. I will give you my situation: 2 computers in my room with 3 monitors consuming about 600watts an hour that provide all the heat for the upstairs. I have turned blocked the heating vent to my room with a towel as well. I stay comfortable although it has so far been a warm winter for us.
Cost: 600Watts *24 hours / 1000 = 14.4 KWH We pay $.09 per KWN which is really cheap.
total cost - $1.296 a day or just under $39 a month.

Space heater running at 1000W
1000*24/1000 *.09 = $2.16 a day or 64.8 a month

This is very interesting. If it comes out somewhat close, it may change the way some folders and crunchers run in the winter. But I doubt a 1000W computer at full load, will put out the same amount as a 1000W heater. Although I dont know honestly.

Well few computers actually run at 1000W these days. I have a 100W power supply in my computer that is feeding a 460 and a 2500k 4 HDD and 1 SSD. At full load it draws about 300W to power everything. An open case with multiple fans would provide the best heating.

I would give up the heat in winter to not have a room in the 90s during the summer

All the work that computers do in winter is free energy. That means that if your pc draws 500 watts form the wall 99% of comes back as heat. So in ecence compared to a 500 watt space heater they should heat the same while the space heater can do no folding.

The fact that machines are less power hungry now a days is what made me curious about this. I mean, you can setup a decent folder that will never pull more than 400w from the wall and 500 is you are overclocked heavily. But at the same time since they use less watts, do they produce a lot less heat too?

Well I guess there is always ways you can force a cpu to produce heat lol. I'm just thinking about making a folding rig to keep my computer room warm instead of buying a space heater, cause I almost bought a space heater and I was like hold on here a second. lol

My space heater output much more heat than my rigs at the same wattage. Energy is transferred into work done (atomic level). Another example would be that amd cards always run hotter than nvidia cards while consuming less watts. So it all comes down to how efficiently the cpu/gpu silicon is converting energy into work (not in terms of displacement in mechanics).

I use my I7 as a heater instead of a 1500 watt heater. Runs for longer but uses about the same power. Plus it is for a good cause so idc biggrin.gif in the summer time though folding will only happen during foldatons because i live in arizona and it gets hot.

I don't think so. And definitely not on the amd vs nvidia cards. I can keep my 6970 under 65C in furmark with less than 100% fan.
