Quietest CPU cooler atm? Plausible lapping? (LGA 1155) - Page 4

Fanless strikes me as ridiculous. My rig is so silent that when the dvd drive spools up it sounds loud, & it has 12 fans, just 12!

Won't cool as well as a high end tower HSF with quality push pull fans set up but it will definitely be better than a tower hsf with no fans on it.

why exaclty would that be a good idea?

Hopefully, my RAM will fit there as well. According to one review, I'll have to buy something without a heatsink on top as then they won't fit.
Speaking of the nofan, do you recommend to lap it?

yes, big RAM Heatpreaders wont fit:

You should also check for the compatibility list on their website as far as mainboards go... The first pcie slot will be blocked too, but that shouldnt be a problem in your case.
And i would not recommend lapping it, the base is perfectly flat.

even if you block the first pci 16x slot, it wont make a big difference if you run your card from 8x OR even in 4x in case of performance.
the performance drop is not even worth to mention about.
good decision either on getting low profile ram, dont fail on their marketing smile.gif

Thanks guys,

As far as mobo compatibility goes, I am waiting for the Z77 to hit the streets biggrin.gif

Does anyone know what is the maximum height for the RAM that would still fit?

I was planning to get 2 x 6GB but it looks like all are triple channel.

Therefore, I'll need to fill 2 slots at 8GB each. 1,866MHz @ CL8 + 1.5V would be ideal with no huge heatsinks but that's unrealistic frown.gif

Crucial 8GB kit (4GBx2) DDR3 Ballistix Tactical UDIMM 240pin, 1866 MT/s, PC3-14900, CL9, 1.5V, CL9 ( 9-9-9-27 )

Any alternatives?

Definitely install it fan down. The Fractal has a filtered vent under the PSU, I believe.
