i7-2600K CPU Degradation?

Thread Starter
I've been using the automatic 4.6GHZ overclocking option on my Z68 Asus Maximus IV Extreme-Z for a few months ever since I upgraded, telling myself I would pushi it farther later on. For the last 2 weeks I've been playing around trying to manually overclock to 4.8 /5GHZ which I haven,t been able to. Now that I've decided to go back to automatic 4.6GHZ the CPU is not stable anymore in neither Prime95 or Intel Speed burn nor games. I was stable at 4.6ghz with 1.35 v core for months. At the moment, my OC is lowered to 4.2 at 1.3vcore...

I didn't exceed 1.45v with my overclock attemps
I didn't exceed 1.85v CPU PLL
I played around a bit with LLC tried most settings
I enabled Internal PLL Overvoltage a few times during my attempts
I also enabled Extreme OV a few times during my attempts

Does it mean I won't be able to reach a minimum of 4.6GHZ anymore?
Im not sure how my CPU could have degradated as I didn't try extrme voltages. Also, my cpu has been running with 1.35vcore for 98.9% if its lifetime.

Thanks for your help, not sure what to do now.

EDIT: Ok, currently 100% stable with a 4.5GHZ manual overclock with 1.35v vcore right now, odd. Sadly it still won't go to 4.6Ghz anymore with that voltage tho.

You ran 12 hour prime 95 blend tests before? And IBT x 50 standard and x20 max?? Whats your LLC setting? same as b4?

Correct me if I'm wrong; I'm not home but I beleive the default setting for this on my board with my 2600k is 1.79v

To be honest I didn't prime test while I was under automatic overclock as I assumed Asus would have tested their stuff and the PC had been 100% stable for 3 months or so. With auto OC everything is left at auto so no need to play with LLC. However, whenever I tried to go past 4.6Ghz on my own I manually handle each setting but I've never been able to be prime stable which is why I gave up.

RIght now I am currently at 4.5Ghz on 1.35v with everything else on auto settings. I was 15hrs prime 95 stable as well as Extrme IntelBurn test stable.

I would really love to get a + / - 5Ghz OC but I'm not sure anymore if it's safe to try now that my CPU won't even be stable at 4.6GHZ anymore with 1.35v (voltage I was using before)

"And IBT x 50 standard and x20 max??" not sure what you mean.

Thanks

As a reference (and i have a /meh' chip.

i do 4.5GHZ @1.325V level 1 LLC (1.75PLL) internal PLL off)

I can do 5.0GHZ @ 1.38V and 1.82 PLL

I know it is just as reference but i'm taking note of these numbers.

Any idea why i'm not stable anymore @ 4.6 with 1.35v . I really don't think I pushed my chip that hard while trying to achieve a 5GHZ OC.
I may not be an expert but I still have a clue what I'm doing. I find it really funny that it still run perfectly fine 100mhz lower with the same vcore as before and with everything else on auto settings (jsut like before too)

Also, I know I MIGHT have a bad chip but even if I did, I can't imagine not being able to push my OC harder than this with one if not the best Z68 Overclocking board.
I must be doing somethign wrong ..

Could my 4 x 4GB DIMMS of RAM be holding me that much on my OC ?

That would be Intel burn test x50 on standard 50 runs. and 20 on maximum. It will stress the system nicely. Now the asus OC is not good at all as Asus doesn't at all cover anything done by the Ocing in its warranty, so on your own with it, I dislike it very much and see it push my system to Statistic highs which arent safe for real world use. Do it manually. If asus cant trust it enough to cover that in warranty might as well OC yourself its safer with your own values, vs asus who wont cover them. And whats your VID on your chip? Opening up Core temp will give you the VID. this will serve as a somewhat refrence to your i7 performance.

My Core temp VID is either 1.3561v or 1.3611, it keeps switching between those 2 numbers.

Under stress with IBT x50 it reaches 1.3861 / 1.3911 but it also goes down to 1.3611 periodically.

I had a bad time with 4.6 never could get it right so I just passed and went to 4.7 no more issues. For what its worth when I first got mine I OCed to 4.5 at a given vcore and in just a few weeks I had to go up .020v more to be stable again some told me the chip had to burn in, I have sense been up to 1.500v for a 5.1 OC and back with no more issues.
