YouTube is famous for letting users upload their short clips for the internet to see. YouTube is also infamous for hosting copyrighted material, such as music videos, cartoons, and full legnth television shows. YouTube has responded to the copyright problems by working on contracts with big producers to make the content legal. They currently make all their money off of banner ads, promotions and sponsorships. There has recently been alot of talk of the possibility of buying YouTube. Mark Cuban, a billionare, co-founder of HDNet and owner of the NBA's Dallas Mavericks, doesn't quite see YouTube as a cash cow. Cuban claims that YouTube will be "sued into oblivion" due to copyright issues, and "anyone who buys that (YouTube) is a moron" because of potential lawsuits from copyright violations. Cuban also doesn't like the advertising potential of the website. "User-generated content is not going away," he said. "But do you want your advertising dollars spent on a video of Aunt Jenny watching her niece tap dance?" Cuban also pointed out that when "Somebody puts up something really good and you get, what, 60,000 viewers?".

Mark Cuban's gonna be eating his words soon. Clearly youtube has a successful concept on their hands and someone other than Cuban will be making good money off it. If a company with enough swing to be able to negotiate the copyrights picks it up, they could generate a lot of ad revenue from it. I think youtube is a viable product, though not yet mature. Once its bought, we'll see its potential.

I'm gonna side with Cuban. While YouTube is a wildly successful site, it inherantly has huge legal troubles and a pretty weak business plan. Between the RIAA and the MPAA, youtube's highest paid worker is probably their lawyer rather than their ceo. not to mention that considering that it has the 8th highest traffic on the web, its revenue is not spectacular. It takes in a good bit of ad money, but its overhead is almost frightening

Youtube should provide a back end app that the RIAA and MPAA natzi's can use to monitor and kill copyrighted material. Then Youtube can just sit back and say: "Hey, it's your fault, you have the tools to kill the content."

you do, of course, realize that they would basically take down every video on the site. The RIAA actually sent Cease and Desist orders to Youtube users who posted videos of them lip-synching/dancing to copyrighted songs (numa-kid type stuff).
