$500 Budget Gaming Rig

Thread Starter
Title says it all. I'm looking for a decent rig in the sub-$500 range. I already have peripherals, hard drives, and the operating system. Games will be played on a 23" 1920x1080p monitor.

Currently proposed:

304

The total (cut off from the picture) comes out to about $470.

Uhm. Get a Phenom 955 II for $105-115 and then put that $100 saved into a better GPU.

You're processing power will be the same or better in certain games. And you FPS will be nearly double.

Basically only go intel when your doing a build excess of $800-900

I wouldn't pick an X4 955 over an i3-2120. Most games won't make use of the two extra cores that the 955 has and would be better off with the more powerful cores of the i3. If you overclocked the 955 to 4ghz or so they would probably come closer to even.

Here's the comparison benchmarks:

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/88?vs=289

The i3-21XX series with it's Hyperthreading packs a punch for it's small price.

I don't think you understand what I'm trying to get at. Processors DON'T MATTER as much as GPU's, they don't even come close. Once you past the CPU bottleneck it's all GPU bottlenecks from there on out.

A Phenom 955 will not bottleneck you, and I guarantee you that if I built a system with a Phenom 955 and a $100 better GPU, it would severely out perform the current setup that OP has posted.

Those benchmarks are irrelevent seeing as the 955 system will have a much better gpu. The thread after all is called "$500 Budget Gaming Rig"

See what I'm getting at? The i3 is twice the cost. I got my Phenom 955 for $99 brandnew.

the 2130 is only $150, what's on his list is a cpu/mobo combo. since we dont know what mobo it is we cant really price compare what that $12 savings is. could try to get the 2100 or any of the other slighty less expensive i3s.

Yeah sorry, mobo info got cut off. The CPU is only $120, plus a $110 mobo. They're in a combo (in that picture) for $200ish.

Mobo Info - sorry if got cut off

this is what i would get this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116397 cpu

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138332 MOBO

~137.98$

spend the extra 70$ on a better gpu 6770 is a refreshed 5770 you would want somthing with a higher bit bus to fully utilize that 1gig of memory may i suggest something like this?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102948

would give that gpu a smack-down in every game! Just my 2cents.gif tho thumb.gif

how about something like this? it only makes sense to go with a H61 for a budget build. 2100 paired with a cheaper h61 mobo(still has 4 ram slots in case u want more later). leaves room to upgrade GPU to a 560 or 6870. The cpu/mobo/gpu u have originally is about $350.

What if I told you that you could get a Phenom II x6 + good board combo for less than the cost of that i3 2120 + board combo...

Sure, extra cores might not benefit you in all games.  Consider the value, though.  That $10-20 you save going with the Phenom II x6 combo is enough savings to enable you to purchase a Sapphire HD 6850 ($15 more than that 6770 right now).
