What Lens For Under $150?

Thread Starter
I just bought a used Canon 40D from Adorama, and I have been debating on what lens I should get. Should I just get an 18-55mm kit lens?

Or I was also looking at a 55-250mm or a 50mm f1.8.

What do you guys think is the best? Also where is a good place to buy lenses?

Thanks,

The 18-55 is decent to start with because it obviously gives you a little range to play with. Personally I would get the 50mm f/1.8 as it is such a fun lens. You can then save some cash for something a little more highend in the USM range or the 18-135mm IS lens which will give you loads more options.

POTN forums, or B&H photo, Adorama, calumetphoto, Amazon, or...there are a bunch of places lol.

I bought both copies i've owned from Beach Camera through amazon, as they had the best price both times I looked. B&H and Adorama are quite reputable, my personal preference is B&H.

The 50 f/1.8 should be the kit lens, but i guess when its your first dslr people think they need to be able to zoom.

50mm lenses have no business being a kit lens for crop cameras. They do not replicate the same field of view as they did on 35mm film cameras, which is why you don't ever see a 50 included.

This, expect somewhere around 80mm or so. That's no fun when you're indoors. Maybe you can bump your budget to $200 and pick up the 18-55mm + 50 1.8. That is a great all purpose beginner combo smile.gif
