Help! Damaged ASUS R4E. Can it be fixed?

Thread Starter
Hey everybody! I am getting back into the building scene with LGA2011. I am waiting on my 3930K (as are many), but decided to purchase all the other parts in advance.

I ordered the R4E from Newegg and when it arrived I heard a rattling sound. I opened the box and found this:

375

***That is a composite image of the front and the back sides!***
There is only the one piece that has broken off.

I have located where it fell off from:

450

And a closer look:

450

My questions are:

1. What is this? A resistor?
2. Can I live without it? Was it just a cap to a resistor? I cannot test my board right now because I won't have a 3930K for a while (whenever intel releases c2)
3. Can I do something to fix it? Like thermal/electrical conducting glue?
4. If you aren't sure can you suggest somewhere I might look for an answer?

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE! I am VERY excited to get back to building rigs! Hopefully this will not sour the experience. biggrin.gif

That is an option, but I was hoping that if it was a quick fix/cosmetic I could save the headache.

Thanks for the reply

its a choke/inductor was it originally soldered on? You can try using it without it on, it might work, but probably not, as i believe the inductor's core is now exposed. Can you ploace that piece back on and maybe put it on tight?

Just return it. You shouldn't have to live with a damaged mobo when you bought it new. I had to wait 2 weeks because my G74's keyboard was faulty. Was well worth it.

I tried to place it back on with a bit of force. It has lost the ability to stick. It does not look like it was soldered. It looks like some kind of glue. In the first picture you might be able to make it out. It looks like an opaque strip of glue or something. If I can get a CPU before the RMA deadline I will test it out. Would you have any idea what this might be an inductor for, i.e. what could I test for failure? Just the ability to boot?

Just get a return it and get a new one. Not that big of a deal or headache since you will not be able to use it either way as you stated above.

Thanks for the help everyone! I will take your advice and begin the RMA process. It sucks, but I suppose I do have some time to wait until 3930K c2. Thanks again!
