Question for 7970 AND Z68 owners.

So, I wanna get a 7970 but I really like the low power consumption I get with my 2600. When I had my 5870 it added about 25W to my idle power draw. Not too much but could be better. You all know that with ZeroCore, a 7970 only draws about 3W when idle with the display off, and the fan doesn't spin.
So my question in, if you use processor graphics as your primary graphics through Virtu, does the card spin the fan? (if it isn't it's in sleep mode ---> 3W)

Couldn't find an answer for this, I'm sure I'll find it on overclock.net:)

In theory it should but I refuse to install virtu. It does lower overall graphics performance, anand had a few benchmarks a while back.

What I noticed in crossfire: my GPU2 turns off after exiting a 3d application and turns completely off. While the PC is sleeping/hibernating, both GPU's turn off and the fans turn off.

Yeah, Virtu lowers graphics performance, but on my 1080p 60Hz monitor, a 7970 would max out any game at 60fps anyway, Virtu or no Virtu.
The only problem with Virtu is that you can't access Catalyst and you can't overclock your gpu, at least that was the case with my 5870.

So guys can someone try this, enable Virtu, connect the monitor to the onboard gpu and see if the 7970 fans spin? Thanks.

This is completely normal, and not related to AMD / 7970s at all eh-smiley.gif.

The new zeroCore power state is for when you turn the monitor off, but leave the PC 'awake'. Then it spins down the GPU.

Also, a 7970 won't "max out" all games at 1080p. AA? AF? DOF? Tess? Not gonna happen.
