Radeon HD 4890's XFire BSOD at factory clocks?

Thread Starter
I have a system with dual HD 4890's in it and i have to severely underclock both cards to avoid bsod.

One card is XFX and the other is Sapphire. The cards both came from the factory already overclocked.

The sapphire card was clocked to 870 Mhz Core clock and 950 Mhz mem clock. And the xfx card at 860 core and 1050 mem.

I have to clock both down to 840 core and 870 mem or else they give me bsod after ten to thirty minutes of the following games:

Just Cause 2

TESV: Skyrim

Need for Speed (2010 or 2011 or whatever the new one is)

and occasionally during other games.

Both cards barely get above 80C after an hour on Furmark, and i have never had them BSOD during Furmark at the higher clock speeds, only during gameplay. Which makes me think dx may be to blame, but that doesnt make sense because JC2 is directx 11, Skyrim is DX10 and need for speed is (i think) dx9

I have a 750W Corsair PSU which, as i have come to expect from corsair, is safe for short bursts up to about 825W.

I am running Catalyst 12.1, but have had the same problem with 11.12 11.11 11.10 all the way back to 11.1.

My proc is a socket 775 LGA "Wolfdale" Pentium clocked to 3.2 GHZ.

I also have 4 1Gb ram sticks made by GSkill. these are also very slightly oced. Not by enough to cause BSOD though.

Thanks for reading this, i hope someone out there knows what the problem is.

Yeah, my best friends 4870 did the same thing. I just had to reflow it and its been working fine. Had to under clock the ram and core for it to work right. Now its back to running with its OC under 70c load. I used an Oven at 425f for 10min, I used liquid no clean soder flux under the chips (cpu, memory, any chip using ball joins). Then I let them cool in the over and just replaced the thermal paste and then all good. There are many videos online showing how to do this. 4890 cf is still pretty fast now of days but you could always get a 7970 and never have to worry about scaling.

900/1000 should be pretty easy for those cards. So test each one at a time to see what card it is and RMA or reflow.

Also your cpu should be able to get up to 3.6ghz pretty easy on a good cooler.

Restore your RAM to BIOS default. Load BIOS Optimized Defaults.

Uninstall Afterburner or whatever you are using. Restart PC.

Reset CCC restore factory defaults. Restart PC.

Turn off all HWA (hardware acceleration).

Do not use 4-pin to 6-pin PCIe power cable adapter.

Update Windows to the latest.

If this is the old setup and just start to give problem recently, try to remember what you changed.

I reset the RAM clocks to default, turned off EasyTune6 (which is what i was using to OC the RAM and Proc) and reset my videocards to default clocks. The Cards are both plugged in correctly. two connectors per card, no adapters. windows was already up to date.

All these problems started when i bought my second card, the XFX. its a used card and when i turn off crossfire, i can overclock the bejeesus out of the sapphire (primary) card with no errors. i got it up to 955 core and 1150 mem before it even started getting hot (hot being anything over 95C to me. it got up to 110 after three hours burn in time)

after reading the other reply about reseating the card, im beginning to think maybe the secondary card is defective somehow.

Turn off ULPS if you are using third party to overclock the cards.

Check each card individually before put them in crossfire.

Also xfx has a life time warranty, so if you send it in they will probably send you a 6870 or 6950 if your lucky. Dont forget that the 4890 is the higher end 4800 cards so they gotta replace it with a high tier video card still. A single 6870 or even a 6950 should yield better performance then a 4890 CF on your cpu.
